Fly Removal- Mapping ESSENTIAL

An Aussie Perspective Part 2

Following all the useful information I read on this site I removed my secondary flys- took 1 hr and straightforward using the great instructions put on here by others..
My exhausts have beeen gutted- cats and innards removed and replaced by lightweight packing and large straight-through centre section (Are now like slip-ons, but look stock). I,ve probably lost only 5-6kg but the weight loss feels obvious. Last week I had a PC3 installed and custom mapped using Dynojet tuning link. Before tuning, air/ fuel ratios at around 3200rpm spiked up to well beyond 17 to 1, and over 16:1 between 2600 and 4300rpm . Cruising at 100kph or 60mph would have the engine running in this danger zone constantly and would overheat the motor as I read has happened to some. . Fortunately on my ride to the tuning shop I made an effort to stay over 4500rpm, although hopefully even on a short ride it shouldn,t have been too much of a problem.

On this stingy dyno(Stock Busas get 150-153 hp) I recorded 172hp premap and 175hp post map (holding 170hp to 11000rpm), although the biggest change was cleaning up a really messy bottom end under 5000rpm. At 3000rpm with mapping I went from 32 to 46hp , both after fly removal and pipe work. Unfortunately I didn,t dyno before fly removal and pipe -work.
From what I have read ,I was hoping for around 180hp with slip-ons (190 hp with full systems), and considering I got 175 on this low reading dyno is probably about right.

Sooooooooo, from what I have seen , mapping is ESSENTIAL, not optional , if you want a safe motor and the full power gains from fly removal

Intimidating? Nah, it just runs the way it always should have.........like a Busa 10 years on and with 10%+ more power everywhere. Beautiful! Now its safe because it is predictable; before it was dangerous in my opinion. These mods should be compulsory! haha

Good deal. I have been dragging my heels about taking flies out - don't need any comments thanks - but your observations regarding the air/fuel ratio are spot on. I have a custom map that a good friend of mine who owns a shop up in Oregon made for a 14 flies out and it adds tons of fuel between 2750 and 4500rpm. I still wonder how accurate the ratio is in all gears however.

Guys - YES - I am puliing the flies this weekend for sure!!

Agreed, mapping is essential. It's what we've been saying all along, not only for correcting the A/F ratio but for the way the bike feels afterwards.

The shape of the standard power curve below 5000rpm is like a dogs hind leg. Straightening this out has got to be the best value-for-money modification you can do.

I was wondering about gutting the cans. Dont have one ungutted cat in my 'fleet". No smog checks in my county.
Noticed just a few tack welds hold the outer shell on and figured it could be done. How about a blow by blow on how you did it? Pleazze?
I pulled my flies last week and am jerking my brain off on exhaust and where to get my pcIII.
So obviously am still running lean.
Will have to make up my mind this weekend and make the call to ryan or brock.
