Newbie seeks suggestions.

Hello all,

I am a new rider and just drove off the lot with a new ZX-14. I'm a large guy about 6'4" and 320 lbs and I was wondering if someone can give me tips on how to configure my bike to accomidate my height and weight.. I already know that I need a new spring so I have ordered one from Race-Tech and plan to have the dealer install it but what else can I do? I feel like my bike groans everytime I get on

All help is greatly appreciated.

For comfort, get the Heli Bar risers. I'm only 6' and they improved my comfort quite a bit. Much less pressure on the wrist.

If you already have the 1.2 kg Race tech springs installed, you are one step in the right direction. The stock valving should be ok for you. You will need to dail up your compression and rebound to suit you needs. I am 6'5" 320 and have 12,000 mi on my 06. I am looking at an Ohlins rear shock but so far $$$ has made me not buy one.

thanks Tool Man,

I just ordered the parts from Race Tech today,

I ordered the 1.2 Spring (SRSPS5818116) and some fork shocks to support my weight (FRSPS3825120). Oh and I also picked up some Heli Bar risers as recommended by Raptor14. What are the good points to installing a Ohlins rear shock? Which one are you looking at?

Ohlins offers a KA544 shock for the 14, spring rated to your request. $$1174.00
I was talking to the Ohlins race tech at Fontana, he almost had me convinced.

Sometime soon

I recommend the Heli risers too. Good luck with those. Corbin seat is nice too, once you break it in. It won't make the bike fit you any better though.

This is actually my second bike but it's been a while since I rode daily. Is it hard to replace the rear spring or should I have a professional do it? I was hoping to find some replacement instruction online but have not been able to find any. Does anyone have any good links that may help me with this?

Thanks.

The ohlins can be had with remote preload adjuster, which can come in handy if you 2 up ride, helps maintain geometry when passenger climbs on, just tighten it up!
The ohlins is infinatley superior, adjustment ranges for dampening much broader, and more sensitive!

My next step is to go ohlins shock and spring.

(6'2", 390lbs)

Still doesn't do too bad with stock cranked up, but still getting the ohlins setup.

Is there a special tool needed to make those adjustments to the stock spring?

paulers - hey congrats on the bike!
Just watch your temp being that you are in Arizona.
There are posts on the site about it - so check those out.

I really like the 14 and if you keep the secondary butterfly valves in - I think it is a great choice for a newer rider of your height and weight.
Let's face it - you can't ride a 600.
I found the 14 to be easy to handle at slow speeds.
I rode it around LA, lane splitting through traffic.
I also thought the power delivery was quite smooth when I needed to pass.

The only part of the ride that was uncomfortable was the pinch I got in my back and wrist from barely using ANY throttle and having to keep my throttle arm Super Still.

Muzzy makes a frame slider that can help with any tip overs...you are a big guy - but the 14 I was riding tipped over and I couldn't hold it up once it started going.

Corbin makes some sweet bags for the 14.

princesskiwi,

Thank you very much for your reply! I really appreciate the wonderful info. I knoticed today on the way to work (7:30am) that all the bars in my temp gauge were full. I had called my Kawa dealer before about it and he said that they run hot during the breakin phase. Is this true? should I have it checked out by another dealer? I will be sure to check out the other posts. I'm also getting about 35/mph, is that normal for a ZX14? I'm guessing it has a lot to do with my weight.

Thanks again!
