Clutch problems-- part ll
In an earlier post I reported on early morning startups that I would release the clutch in first gear and the bike would bearly move even with the clutch fully out. After riding for five minutes the clutch would be back to normal. Most recommended warming it up longer before starting out. What was always the case was the gear only seemed to engage when the clutch lever was 3/4 of the way out. When new I remember the clutch catching much sooner when beginng the hand release.
Sunday, after a long warm up, I got on the bike and the clutch lever would not move at all. Even with two hands it would bearly move. Bike would show 1st gear on the display but the bike would not move as the gear was not engaged. I undid the rubber gomlet covering the hydralic fluid "overflow?" and immediately lost all pressure to the clutch lever which is strange since I didn't undo the nut.. The lever would now just go back and forth using two fingers. I obtained a can of Motul and started to place a small amount into the resevior as I would work the clutch lever and then bleed the top "overflow/" and the bottom one near the foot peg. After I believe I eliminated all air bubbles I once again had pressure on my clutch lever but the bike would not go into gear.
I do not drag race. Just accelarate hard and go fast. The bike is still under warranty. The local dealer says he can't take me for two weeks. It's very frustating. Could salt from Bonneville gotten into the clutch plates or some other location? Has anyone else had this problem? Any recommendations beside a good bottle of Merlot? Thanks--

Just throwing ideals out....think maybe one of the steels was sticking from being warped and was stuck. After you tried to pull in the clutch it put pressure against the plate and it finally broke loose?...just a thought..

I guess salt could have gotten in the cover that holds the piston that pushes the clutch rod... It's wide open in there and if salt got in there from the front sprocket spinning that could bind the piston ... pull the cover off and take a look , it only a few bolts...Salt does bad things in a real hurry ....

A service manual would serve you well. I would clean and lubricate all joints, and bleed the system. The manual also covers clutch inspection procedures.

I would pull the slave cover, and the clutch cover and inspect the entire unit.
Maybe you have a clutch basket problem. I've seen baskets grooved so bad the plates could not seperate, cause they were binding on the basket.

Thanks guys. The local Kawa shop took the bike in yesterday. I'll keep you informed. Having a manual is an excellent idea
