Exhausting Question

Picking up my new 14 next week....thinking about different exhaust options...here's a picture of my old 76 Z-1 .... notice the 'special race' Yoshimura exhaust with the curved head pipe (like a bow)....as opposed to most exhausts that have a 90 degree bend down.... just curious what you all think about that....havent seen the curved/bowed exhaust around...made sense to me at the time...(of course it was a pain because the piped had to be dropped to change oil filter) easy less abtrusive way for the exhaust gas's to flow.... excuse the quality of the pic

I just bought a 07 ZX 14 and had it broke in on the dyno with a Tsukigi pipe and PCIII and it made 175 hp after only 72 miles it should still gain about 10 hp's from just riding

Well, the exhaust as it is now doesn't exactly make a 90 out, as the engine in the '14 is tilted forward somewhat compared to the photo above. I'm not sure of the angle, but I'm sure one of the guys will jump in here with a little knowledge on it.

In those days Pops (Yoshimura) and many other of the Japanese brand exhaust companies basically hand bent them. Some techniques for doing thin gauge bending was to pack them with media or sand, heat them up, and bend them around a mandral. The flow "advantage" is really not even measurable and it was extremely time consuming.

When CNC benders became more of the norm in the 80's, everyone including Yoshimura, Moriwaki, etc. changed to the more precise machine radius bends. And as Stalwart pointed out, when things like radiators, body work, etc, came into play, it mandated sharper and more precise bending. Of course manufacturing volume was another huge aspect as CNC bending is much, much faster.
