GPS mounting
Hi!
I have a Garmin Quest and want to mount it on my ZZR1400/ZX-14. Does anyone know if this will suit? http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=detail&product_id=1
In other words, whats the diameter on the "stemopening"? Thanx!

Here's my setup. A Mio C310X gps and a Techmount. Works GREAT!!! And not a Thousand dollars!

zumo 550, $714 from Amazon... comes with a mount and hardwire power wire for the bike. That makes the gps cost only about $600 if you look at it that way.
Not to mention being the best, motorcycle friendly, waterproof, gps made so far.
My wife even thinks it's cool in the car, and she's not into gadgets.

Matt you were going to post pics? I have the RAM mount on the left side, bottom bolt of Ram only and have it leaned towards the inside. Is that something like you're doing?
Jim K, I'm seriously open to the tech mount product, but let me ask you something, how hard is it to get the GPS off that mount? Or are you pulling that whole shaft out of the neck? If so, does it then remain bolted to the tech mount? Why I ask is I use this thing as much in the car or more than the bike and I like the Garmin factory parts for serious ease of changeout. Matter of fact, the RAM that comes with Garmin stays bolted to the bike, GPS just pops off. Although I like your position of the GPS a little better on the bike.

Big fan of Ram mounts, here. To use on a ZX-14, just get a RAM .87 X 2.25 W/ 11 MM HOLE & 1" BALL, a longer machine screw for the "clipon" bracket and a spacer.

no offence tsl (in advance) , but IMHO the ram mounts aren't even in the same league ... side by side test it's pretty obvious.. Ram stuff is okay as a "beginner" mount (for lack of a better term) but the build quality just isn't there and there are way way way too many reports of them failing... with the $$$ value of the gear I've got bolted to the bike I simply can't afford to roll the dice on a ram mount.

No offence taken, fish, but since my Ram stuff worked fine on my dual-sport bike ridden off road and thousands of miles on my RT, I think it will be fine on the 14.

For those of you who use the stem-mount Techmount...question...does it stay rigidly mounted in the stem, or does it spin easily from side to side? I mounted my RAM in the center stem and once all tightened up. it's rock solid, still, I'd prefer the Techmount because it gets the GPS lower down closer to the stem and has a much cleaner look. I'll post pics of my ZUMO on the 14 later today. Stevewfl, the Zumo should be stem mounted for best use and look...need to add a $5.00 part to do that, but it's easy.

The techmount doesn't budge an inch... I have 4 of them... used them on several different bikes.. machining is unbelievably precise.. .totally overengineered for the application.. the Ram mount isn't in the same league (just hold the two side by each and it's immediately obvious) ... and no... it doesnt spin or move or shake.. it's bombproof.

Interesting...I was cruising their site earlier...and have a couple a questions fer ya on that mount. Will send ya a PM. Agreed on the RAM mount VS the Techmount, but that's also greatly reflected in the price.

Fish whats the security about with tech mount can anyone just pull it out of the stem? if so and you remove it, does the Zumo just pop off or is it the 4 bolts? I swap between vehicles (actually its in the car more)

Steve.. it doesnt just "pop out" of the stem... it's in there pretty tightly... tight enough that there's little or no difference between taking the techmount off the bike or any other piece of kit off your bike... say I want to steal your mirror... that's not hard, is it?
Anyways.. the techmount has a standard AMPS hole pattern in it, and the Garmin mounting base screws right to it... very straight forward and easy install... FYI their factory is near where you live.. .why not drop by and get a tour?

Thanks, may take that tour! I noticed they're in winter park...an hour or so away.
One more question, the amps thing on the tech mount means I have to unscrew 4 bolts to move the GPS to the car if I understand the mount? Our is the AMPs mount you're referring to have the little ball looking thing?

The GPS unit easily snaps on to the Techmount, like this...
The plate with the 4 fingers is an accessory Techmount sells...
The Gps cradle snaps on to the plate...
The Gps snaps to the cradle...
The finished piece. It slides into the hole in the steering stem. It's very "snug" and doesn't move at all.
