helmet type bluetooth? Hi,
Can anyone suggest their favorite Bluetooth for a helmet, or suggest which bluetooth for helmet NOT to buy?
I just purchased a Zumo 550 GPS and want to enable the XM Satellite and phone interface on the 14 (note ZX14 for moderators). I really would appreciate input before I pull the trigger on a specific brand/model.
Before I get blasted/hijacked please note:
a) yes I realize it may not be the best idea to bluetooth a helmet with cellphone and radio
b) yes I realize I could 'prolly search past threads but I'm hoping to hear most recent opinions

Autocom Active Plus. That is what I am getting for my ride with the Kenwood radio for bike to bike communication. You can hook-up the Autocom right to your bike's power or stick the lil' fugger in your tank bag... from there you have bike to bike, phone, IPod, rider to passenger, and other stuffs like radar and GPS connectors all at once. It is real sweet. A little on the expensive side but from my friends who use them tell me that if taken care of fairly well (meaning you aren't putting it between two Sumo wrestlers fighting over a bucket of KFC) then it can last a lifetime. Anyway, here's the site: http://www.autocomamerica.com/comparisons.cfm/ ____________

Autocom's are cool, but you're gonna end up with wires all over the place! It's not a bluetooth solution.
Steve - make sure whatever you end up with is stereo if you want to use it eventually with some sort of music system. I haven't heard of a stereo system yet, but there could be one out there. I've heard that Cardo is coming out with a new Scala Rider system that's stereo, but it's not out yet (http://cardowireless.com/scala_rider/).

Pretty much have to build your own. I used a set of wireless headphones. Mounted the transmitter behind the gauge cluster and the speakers inside my helmet. Have ipod and radar detector wired to the transmitter. You can do it with a little ingenuity. Worked out quite nice for me. I hate wires connecting me to the bike.

Thanks Matt, the Scala and Motorola is what I am looking at. And all the reviews I see are with you, Scala seems the choice. I'm almost opting for not stereo so I have one ear open for traffic....

We got the Vemar VTXIN
and the Dainese Airstream Corse
I dont know if they are currently available in the U.S so If current interest exists, you'd likely have to order through a european distributer and suffer the pitfalls of King George and his war and the resulting effects of the present exchange rates of the Euro/Pound to the US Dollar.
I picked up the Dainese a while back while in London and it works okay, not perfect, yet as I understand no bluetooth solution is perfect, they still have bugs to work out regarding ease and resiliency of pairing process, battery life, clarity and strength of audio (Mic and speaker) quality, etc. I'm sure they will get there eventually but I wouldnt currently expect perfection. Kinda 7/10ths of what we hope it to be...
There are certainly a bunch more options out there, these are the ones I'm personally familiar with.

rudebwoy thanks. Neither of these popped when I put them in yahoo shopping for USA. A friend and I are talking about a trip to europe to watch a motoGP race, it may be a possibility to come back with one of these, who knows. I'm a big fan of Dainese products anyway.

I have one of them Nolan NCOMs with bluetooth. They're pretty good and sound/transmission quality is very reliable and interconnectable with Ipods/GPS etc.. And it's priced reasonably well. I believe that it works just a s well as the BMW bluetooth helmets. It is slightly heavier than our favourite Arai or Shoei helmets. Dual Visor is the one I really like....don't have to worry about carrying a spare visor if riding thru the night. Not sure if it's available in the US.

Hey stevewfl. Just bought the Zumo 550 today. Was also wondering about the Bluetooth
solution and what type of system to get. If you get something write a short blurb about fit and comfort. I don't particularly care about connecting up my cell phone but at times being able to hear the turn-by-turn directions from the GPS would be nice. I used to travel all over the country on business and the GPS I carry with me for rental cars has got me around LA, Seattle, Phoenix, ect. Can't wait to get the Zumo on the 14.
I'm leaning towards the Scala rider. Dealer in tampa willing to sell me one what he claims to have in it- $108. I've been out of town more than in lately and just haven't had time for toys.

I have the autocom and the kenwood setup. I use the blue tooth to connect my phones to the zumo. I use custom made earplugs to reduce the noise, you do know you should use earplugs regardless right...
Anyway, up to 75+, Since I never speed I do not know of any faster.... but it is crystal clear and no one knows I am on a bike.
Bluetooth is not the solution I want for the headset so I am looking for the best sound to connect to my toys...
Ipod, GPS, V1, Kenwood 3101....
Only thing is that the system is pricy once you get the custom mold ear plugs.
However, you can hear your pals, listen to the IPOD and the GPS, all at high speed and the same time....if that would be your choice. When using your phone the system cuts all other noise off. Thus the perfect connection it provides.

Based off of reviews i have read and my dealer having 4 of the 6 headsets they had returned for ''just not working'' i would stay away from the Scala/BlueAnt.

With the summer over in Florida, any news on new products? I figured Bikeland would have some reviews out by now regarding new and improved bluetooth goodies :P
