The 1st oil change

Does the first oil change have to be done by the dealership, why pay these clowns $200 plus dollars just to drop a stinkin nut and some nasty oil out. I mean cmon now any person with basic hand tools can do this and yes they check alot of crap but why so high. Are there checks that they do that cannot be done by the average home mechanic?

I have done all my work on the '14 so far. Just document everything you do and keep all the receipts for the oil and filter. It depends on what kind of relationship you have with your dealer.........I think technically you have to have the 600 mile check done by the dealer for the warranty to be valid..............but again it comes down to the relationship you have with your dealer.

Personally, I have heard of too many nightmares from other riders when it comes to service work done by dealers.

In many cases, the so called mechanic working on your bike probably knows a lot less about your bike than you do..........he is probably a young guy that kind of likes motorcycles but with minimal training. He certainly does not care about your bike like you do. He is probably working on a flat rate system and he wants to get your bike done as quickly as possible so he can get on to the next one.

There are not very many gifted bike mechanics around............lets face it, all the really good mechanics are probably heavy duty mechanics making way more money than they ever could at a bike dealership. If you know a good mechanic you trust to work on your bike, then you are fortunate.

everytime i took my bike to dealership, either they scratch something or missing couple of fairing screws. simple things like oil change, adjust the chain etc... , you can do it yourself.
on top of that you don't have to leave your bike at dealer for couple days for hour of work.

The place where I bought my bike told me I could do the maintenance myself. I do have a question though. As far as tightening bolts, which ones do I check? Do I need to strip off all the plastic and find every little bolt I can or do I just look over the bike as it is and tighten what I see?

just FYI (yours are probably tight) when my bike was new my gas tank screws were barely screwed in and such, found several others when I put the pipe and PC on.

I'm sure now that I have 8000 miles something else is loose

Doing the 600 mile check yourself does not void your warranty....At least not in the U.S.

I haven't found a dealer yet that has mechanics I trust so I try to do all my own stuff and what I can't do I pay a good mech to do. Heck I've even foregone warranty work by the dealer and paid to have stuff done by someone I trust. Doesn't take too many bad experiences to end up like this. Just document everything that is done and keep receipts.
