Zx14 Warranty Issues
Has anyone actually heard of a zx14 that has needed to go in for engine waranty repairs yet?

Gday boys.
Aussiescrew - don't forget that the ZX14 was released in the US way ahead of Australia and much of the little faults were already corrected. The Kwaka guys here have never heard of anyone having valve cover leaks or more so - warranty work being done. Saying that, I suppose the dealers will push for warranty work if needed in order to maintain their customers. The Aussie market isn;t as big the US so the dealers can;t afford to stuff up with the clients.

I have not actually seen a blown up 14 but have heard of guys getting them brand new and going straight to the track to run the breath right out of it and the dealership still honered the warranty.

Actually I agree with your comments about the US and Aussie markets. It is very common for products to be tested and fine tuned in the States before we get them, but mainly because we have such a pissy small market. But my reason for asking was actually because its pretty hot down this part of the world and every 14 owner I bump into are all commenting on how hot the motor runs. The bloody temp is always at 5 or sometimes even the 6th bar. I keep watchin and waitin for the temp warning to come on... BUT THEY ARE ALL DOING IT!!! Have you folks in the US had the same temp issues or is it just hot down here???? This is why I asked about warranty issues, I figure this might end up being a recall issue.

Agree totally with the heat thing.
The temp guage doesn't really worry me - unless a warning comes on.
If the engine isn't getting close to everheating then the guage may just use an unfortunate scale or levels - (maybe the current 6 should be at 5 etc).
The heat actually coming from the bike does. Feels far, far hotter that any other bike I've owned - can even get uncomfortably hot while still traveling at decent speeds (previous bikes got airflow at speed that gave good ventilation between engine and rider).
Maybe the frame going over the engine and the fact that the fairing is alot more enclosed just give the bike a different "hot spot".
Maybe some George Foremen's with a mesh rather than solid plastic could give the air venting needed (straight onto the knees though - so may not work)

Yes...Some of the first post on the site last spring and summer were about this very issue and if memory serves me correctly it was found that the actual coolant temps were within the limits. The temp gage was showing higher than most temp gages on other makes of bike for the same coolant tempature. loose the stock exhaust cans. They hold in heat and wait for the breakin period to expire to change the oil. You should have some luck with this. There was talk of putting on another coolant fan but I am not sure if anyone actually did it.
My 14 ran hotter than I thought it should and after the first oil change the weather got cooler and the hot rides did too. I am still running stock pipes and plan to fab up a pair of my own when I take the time to make it happen but with the weather getting warm in the Carolinas this week I may wait to see how the 80 degree days affect the bike now that it is broke in.
Some of the other guys may be able to help more than I.

The 14's in the states run lean on fuel. My old YZF750 when new ran way rich and the coolant fan never ever ran. After reworking the heads with other mods in the engine I got the carb set right and it ran hotter.

What is the standard octane level in fuel in the USA? In Australia it varies between 91 - 95 - 98 octane. Does this make any noticeable difference in running temps? Anyone know about this?

We use RON method to measure octane in Oz.
U.S. uses and average of RON and MON methods.
Theres about a 4 or 5 point difference between the 2 methods, so an 87 Octane fuel in America would be a 91 or 92 Octane fuel when labeled in Oz.
I think regular gas in America is about (their) 87 which is pretty much similar to our regular unleaded.
We get 98 as our top level pump fuel (optimax, ultimate, v-power etc) which I guess would be a 93/94 rating in the US.
What are the higher rating pump gas in US thats generally available?
