dealership service and protection plans..

I went in today and finalized everything on my 07' black 14 but also took advantage of the offer of a "pre-pay service" and "tire and wheel coverage".

There obviously is already the factory warranty, for failures/ defects, etc but their "pre-pay service" offer cost $599 up front which covers three years of factory service, unlimited mileage. Knowing what I have already paid for service for the bikes I already have, this seemed like an amazing deal and unlike what I tend to do I agreed to this un-planned upon offer. Also the tire and wheel coverage they have was for 5-years, unlimited mileage and it specifically covers tire damage (punctures for lack of other way to describe other damage that can occur) and wheel damage, any damage to the wheel that can be deemed physical and/or structural..in essence more than simply cosmetic. This bike has chrome wheels and the offer of $299 for 5-years of coverage seemed like a good way to go.

I dont suspect I'll damage the wheel but if I do, there ya go! More than not a single puncture within the 5-year period is more a possibility than not and I figured this protection covered the price of a new tire and mount/balance on just the first puncture.

All of these were unexpected extras and in general I dont like the nickle and dime-ing that can happen at sales time but I've gotta say that these sounded good and I went for them.

Thats an extra grand on top of what I paid for the bike, I declined their offer for the kawi extended warranty, they had the 4-year for $670 and I believe I've seen it for sale elsewhere for like $400 and I have until the end of my factory warranty to purchase that.

All in all there was this additional unplanned for chunk of cheese that I laid out for but I have a sense that it was pretty sensible to take advantage of it, I would have most certainly made use of the dealer service department for the maintenance anyway as I am a combination of too goddam lazy and want warranty issues if any to be without hiccup if/when they occur and haviing the dealer service dept do them will keep everything kosher. I know for sure I wasnt going to perform a valve-clearance check service myself.

Whaddya think about the additional services I went for? I queried the salesman rather rigoruously for scenarious to confirm for myself the full extent of the coverages and to see if there were any bullshit holes in the deal and it all seemed pretty straightforward so far as I could tell. $599 for 3-years worth of services and $299 for 5-years if any damage occurs to my tires (regular wear obviously does not qualify) or wheels (chrome). Sounds okay??

Anyhow I'm just digesting what I've done and now I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do about my cage, putting this loot down for this bike has changed my initial plan as to what car I thought I was going to get. I now have to scale back my dreams of a tech-laden "near-luxury" European sport sedan. Alas for my aspirations for a loaded 3-series...or a loaded G-35 come to think of it.

How is truck ownership? Never thought I'd ever own one but that new Tundra looks badass..cloth interior of course without the NAV, no push-button start, seat massagers or bluetooth..ahh compromise for the joy of motorcycle ownership..

I liked the tire package for $200. Of course now that I've got it I'm riding the first bike I've ever owned to go 9000 miles with no nail. I stayed away from the other stuff.

Toyota Tundra <---I'm with you there. I'm thinking about that truck to pull the track toy. I like Fords but the way they are these days I'd about rather than purchase an American truck

warranties are a waste of $$$. On top of which you are going to have to bring it to a dealer, which is the last place you want to bring it too. And if you think youre going to get top tier service at a dealer... think again.
There are certain risks with owning a new bike. Most of those are covered by the manufacturers warranty. Consumables like tires and clutches should be considered a cost of owning a high performance sportbike.
Anyway... you didnt state what kinda mileage you ride annually, but I suspect not many.
If you keep you're bike stock, you can easily get 30, 40, or even 50k with just tires, brakes, and oil changes. These new bikes run like a top, given the level of performance they are sold with.

I think that is good service to have but I just think most people stop wheeling and dealing after they negotiate the price of the bike I would like to remind people that EVERYTHING AT A DEALERSHIP is negotiable they make as much profit on warranties and interest rates as they do on the bikes themselves maybe more
