Race an airplane--
I have a opportunity to race an airplane at out upcoming airshow. Unfortunately the runway is only 4,800 feet long.
My question is-- from a standing start what would my time be crossing the 2,000 foot line?
(in front of the crowd)
From this time I would be able to derive an average speed and therefore could determine the type of plane I would race. Obviously the plane would fly just over my head at a top speed when the race begins.

Even flying Tomcats getting to 150 knots (about 173 mph) still took a little time - and I know the ZX-14 would definitely be going faster than a Tomcat at the 1/4 mile -so - you have plenty of room with a 4800 ft runway

The clarify this race-- The airplane will already be in the air and will line up on the runway as if on a final approach course. As it flies over me, still sitting on the runway, I will accelerate and try and beat the airplane to the finish line which is approximately 2,000 feet away.
So... a 1/4 mile is 1,320 feet. If an average 14 drag bike can do 9.5 to 10.5 seconds at this distance what would be the time to accomplish 2,000 feet?
Or another way to look at it-- How long does it take a 14 to achieve top speed in 6th gear with hard acceleration? (not on a dyno) That time might be more accurate. Has anyone experimented?

Best guess:
14's well preped have gone 200mph in the standing mile, probably with a tailwind. With about 1250 feet for stopping.
We were not timed at the Texas Mile but I swear I remember 24sec at Maxton being posted/reported.
If you're good on brakes, 3500ft w/1000ft stopping should get you 170-185, w/tailwind. I would use a braking marker.

At 120 the plane will cross the finish line in 11.3 seconds .....if you do a 10 sec qtr you got 1.3 seconds to cover the next 600+ feet....

1/4 mile is 1320 ft at around 140mph in 10.5 seconds, if you make a bad run. Could vary by 2 sec or so depending on how good you are at the 1/4 mile. I'd guess at 2000 ft you'd be going 155 and it would take you 12-13 sec.

If you are the one racing you may only have one choice. Make a few timed runs to check your speed. Get clearance for takeoff without wings.

I agree with phytrax's estimate. Through a standing quarter at around 150mph you are travelling at 220ft/sec. So it will take another 3 seconds or so to travel another 680 feet. Subtract a bit though because you will still be accelerating.
The average speed through the 2000ft would be only 104mph though.
