single front brake
im curious to know how efficient the front brakes are when you take one side off? i know they wont work as good, but curious to know how much you lose.

The tire is the limiting factor of stopping, but 1 brake is not going to be as good. I personally would not do it b/c not only is it not smart - it would be a disaster if there were a problem on one side........and you only had one side......
There is no sane reason to remove one.....

I rode a Roaring Toyz custom the other day that had the typical single sided setup they do to keep the majority of the wheel showing and it stopped surprisingly well. I wouldn't race it but it definitely stopped predictably.

At least those customs have huge rear tires that can be used for braking....sure as hell can't turn......

I've done mine like that, haven't had a chance to ride it yet. I expect my stopping power to be limited, not sure by how much. I'll just have to adjusted my attention and way of braking . Can't be to bad as people have been doing it for years with minimal to no problems at all.

Probably no big thing for the avg/normal riders - or drag bikes, but those who ride it to the point of killing it may see some effects :-)

I could'nt ever bring myself to " lose " anything , i always like gaining or improving for function ...

I turned my Braking waves (with HH pads) VERY blue at Maxton on a 184 mph pass. I would be concerned about what it might have done with just one rotor. Couldn't have safely made 1st turnoff, I'm pretty sure. (12R, but just giving my experience)

this may be a little off topic, but why the hell do we still have to buy bikes with rubber lines? even the overpriced yamaha r1 special edition has rubber lines - what the fuck is that all about? actually angers me that manufacturers expect 10K for a bike with inferior rubber lines, which eventually fail.
the brake setup on my zx12 was so horrible that i ended up buying a brembo master, brembo calipers and braketech iron rotors.
the setup on the 14 is good for stock, but i can see myself upgrading the calipers when its time for new rotors.
i wouldnt ever run 1 rotor/caliper, the weight savings or "cool" look are not worth a potential failure and degraded performance.

I agree. My track bike has steel lines of course. The 14 would too if I planned on keeping it more than a year. They're simple to replace though, take a few hours pop 'em on and bleed them.
I'm sure Duc / Aprilia or such offer steel braided lines right out the chute.

I like the safety of 2 brakes up front (that's about 70-80%) of your stopping power!

i wasnt asking for smart ass remark i was really wanting to know to the guys that have done it HOW much of the braking it took away...

Well... IMO It's all about simple physics.
If you have a brake rotor of a given diameter.=A
Apply a given Force =B
Add given weight=C
And then Multiply that Weight by Speed =S
What you get is your ABC's scattered all over the road trailing a long S mark.
Seriously just about any manufacturer can produce a rotor caliper and master cylinder combo with sufficient braking power to lock the front wheel, that being said the reason for having two rotors is to 1/2 the load on each rotor.
Heavy braking produces a LOT of heat.
Although 1 rotor can produce enough force to overwhelm the traction of a front tire or produce a stoppie, if asked to do it repeatedly it will overheat and fade (lose its ability to stop you)
IF you take off 1 rotor of a 2 rotor system YOU WILL seriously degrade your bike ability to stop YOU
If you are a drag guy and you are to a point were a couple of pounds are going to make a difference, look at your belly, no extra fat? Maybe pop a rotor off, all it could hurt is you
If you are a street rider and live in a state that does not have a helmet law, By all means please take off one rotor OR better yet two, then please leave your helmet in the garage right next to the rotors

I've disabled a front caliper one time to get home, and i noticed "initial bite" was similar but a defiinite loss overall was realized!
