16/42 top speed?

Could someone help me out with theoretical top speed? Could it still hit 186?

No - 171MPH and the 186 MPH speed limiter will kick in unless you have a speedo healer inplace. With Sppedo Healer the top rev limiter will hit at 184MPH and that will be all she has got with that gearing.

Rich so what is the diameter of the tire with 200lb rider with 0 miles on the tire, to 4,000 or 5,000 miles on the tire? Then how do you calculate for tire expansion and any spiing or slippage?

All things entered, obviously minus wind resistance, it shows that gearing capable of 191mph

I have watched everything from the math to the trap speed - the major issues relate to tire wear, tire deformation at speed and tire slippage - My best estimates are stock (17/41) will do 200.xxMPH at redline in 6th gear as confirmed in Brock diaries 3.0 as he was cliipping the revlimiter in the traps. Top speed for my gearing (18/40)is 195.xx in 5th and 217.xx in 6th. Mine caught rev limiter about 125 feet befor the trap - and was clocked at 193.9MPH. - which is reduced from the hitting into rev limiter. These number would put 16/42 at 184.xx. on the rev limiter in 6th These numbers also align with drag strip trap spedes predicting stock to do 155.xx MPH in 4th when you catch the rev limiter. I think you should be able to correlate others' actuals at the track with these reference points.

Thanks Kevin.
Thats quite thorough.
I want to put the 16 on, but I dont want the bike to top out before the speed limiter. I really
don't care much to run over the limiter, but right at it would be nice.

16/41 should do 188.xxMPH on the rev limiter assuming a speedo corrector to get past the normal factory speed limiter which will kick in around 175MPH.

Do you want a top speed or top accerlaration? You can't have both. For top speed go to an 18/41 at seal level or maybe a 17/41 or 17/39 at higher altitudes. It will depend on your density altitude.

16/42 gearing will give you 17.38mph per 1000rpm.

Bob - what set-up (e.g 18/41) were you and your friends using on your timed runs with clocked speed - your numbers are still 3% optomistic from my perspective. Also how much tire pressure and tire wear? Flyboy - what gearing were you running at Bonneville and what top speeds did you achieve? Did you have any runs that you stayed in 5th gear or was everything in 6th?

PS - Any of you using data acqusition units that records during runs?

Firstly I use 76.92 inches as the tire circumference in the spreadsheet I developed to play with gear ratios.
Last year I was geared 18/41 for the 205mph run. I thought a tad over-geared but then a nice tail wind came to assist, pure luck. It was the first time out after modifying the bike so it was all theory up to that time. Now I have some real data to go forward from.
18/41 would give 216mph at 10800rpm which is why I said over-geared. 17/40 would be good for 209mph at the same 10800rpm. (That's spreadsheet rpm not tacho' rpm). I will probably gear 17/40 next time because with 190bhp or thereabouts it's unlikely to pull max rpm with a higher ratio. I don't have any data logging or acquisition, the speeds at our meeting are measured by Trevor Duckworth's Straightliners organisation, they are used for Records meetings here in the UK and are accurate.

I didn't do any runs in 5th but the same rpm that gave me 205 in 6th would give 184 in 5th. Tyre wear ? I don't do quarters, just top speed runs, but still with a pretty hard launch. The bike has done around 40 top speed runs and 2000 miles. The rear is just about ready for a change. I have kept to standard pressures and OEM Bridgestones.

At Bonneville, with the density altitude, I had around 158 hp and went 195.1 mph. Two of my runs were in fifth gear and I couldn't get it into 6th.

Flyboy - do you recall the speed that you attained on those 2 runs - and were you running stock gears or did you change either the front or rear sprockets?

also what were your class designations? for AMA and FIM

I don't recall the classes, either PP or MPS. Fifth gear runs got me around 186 mph. I started 18/41, then went to 17/41, then to 17/39. Highest RPM achived was only 10,200 which was not optimum so I will be experimenting again this Sep. You can read about the week at--

Yes, I'm aware of that. Damn the ODO, I want to know how fast I'm going without
doing the math constantly. I know, I'm lazy. lol!
