New Exhaust Idea ** Low Mounted Slip-ons

I was wanting a set of pipes that were mounted down low along the bottom that would be similar to a drag style dual slip-on but was unable to find a company that made them. So, I decided to take a chance and attempt to build my own pipes using parts from my stock 14 exhaust system and a set of stainless steel resonated tips. I was hoping to come up with a one of a kind, unique look and deep tone sound. After cutting and mounting the pipes to the bike for the fit that I was looking for, it was then to the hard part... How to keep such a short pipe from sounding too loud, but to get that deep low tone that I was hoping for. The quick and easy mount it up and hope for the best idea didn't work. It was too loud and it lacked any type of quality sound... Just loud & raspy. So, after several attempts at trying to get it right I finished with a dual baffle / 3" chambered type system using some of the guts from the stock 14 pipes. It produces just enough back pressure to keep the big motor happy at all RPM's and echos an amazing deep low quality tone, kind of sounds like a street legal drag bike, if you will. I'm very happy with the final product, both with the look part of it and especially the sound! And if you're wondering, how does it perform? Well, let me tell you. It runs stronger & pulls harder than it ever did. So, for any of you out there with a similar idea of personalizing your ZX-14 to give it your own look, sound or style, I say go for it. Remember, it's not what you buy, it's what you build... So make it your own! Pics of my bike and the pipes will be coming soon. Be safe!

Anything closer to the road than stock would be ground off as I corner :-)

They run low and slant up towards the rear. No chance of dragging them... Unless you lay it down.

Great idea QWICK. I'm also a fan of the duals on the mighty 4TEEN. Can't wait for the pics. I wonder if Muzzy would make M-10 series slip-ons for it? Just a thought. Anyway congratulations on your accomplishment.

For the minimal investment in both time and money I think these look great. I appreciate you're efforts and of course this begs the question. Why exactly does those systems you see that look similar to this cost $650 on e-bay? The only thing I think couls use changing (if possible) would be to have them swept back a bit further so they hug the bike better and that might keep thm from touching during corners. Still, I think they lok way cool. Do you have a sound file so we could hear them? Maybe I'll take the saw to my stockers and see what I could cook up...

Very Cool!

Phil

Noticed on the last pic, you have the rear belly pan on, but on the rest it's removed. Did it get cooked by those tips?

What is up with the chrome tips? Reminds me of a loud Ford F-150 with flowmasters, tips coming out the back, and a sticker in the back window of Yosemite Sam saying "Don't follow to closely" with his guns blazing.

(just joking)

ROADRAGE- FOOTPEGS WILL HIT LONG BEFORE PIPES TOUCH THE GROUND. PIPES WERE FIRST INSTSALLED WITH THE BELLY PAN IN PLACE WITHOUT ANY HEAT ISSUES. I JUST LIKED THE LOOK WITHOUT IT. WITHOUT THE BELLY PAN THE BIKE LOOKS CLEANER. IT ACCENTS THE DUAL PIPE LOOK.

I guess it looks ok,looks kinda close to where your shoes/boot heels are.
And if you don't mind smelling like a exhaust pipe when you go somewhere.

I haven't experienced any problems with an exhaust smell issue while using these pipes on my 14. But I can't say the same when riding my Vmax. (Carbs vs. F-Inject. though)

Look sweet Quick! What did it run you to make them in the end?
Could you reproduce them again and at what cost?

They would be just what i would want on the street, but would roast my ankles at the track!

This pic shows that they are tucked more closely to the bike than you would think

Here's a pic of my wife's 14 and her Area P pipes - SUPER NICE pipes... she loves them!

Ok, guys...... wondering why I'm just QWICK and she's QWICKR??? I'm no dummy... she can be anything she wants to be. And, if she drives a 14, she's gotta be pretty cool.

With the belly pan. But personally, I think it looks better without.

Hey Countersteer, just trying to "Make it my own". And I was hoping to save a little money in the process. Total cost for the whole idea was $36 and a lot of thought on my part. I'm not a fabricator or a machinist, so I think that I did a decent job by coming up with the idea and then doing the work myself. As for the wider rear tire, I'll probably try the Michelin Pilot Power 200/50zr17 or one of the other 200 series "Sport Bike" tires. So thanks for being objective and helping me out. That's why we really enjoy being a part of this site. Be safe

QWICK, the firewall or whatever electronic doohicky restrictor here at MacDill AFB won't allow the pics to come through. Normally I wouldn't bother to ask but If it's not to much trouble would you mind sending the pics to my e-mail address as attachments. After reading all of the comments I must see them for myself. If it's too much trouble I'll understand. I was leaning to the Area-P slips but your mod has my creative juices flowing. In other words I'm thinking of trying something like that for myself.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.
