Dude, if I go visit Florida and deal with all the old people pulling out of their driveways without observing or get stuck behind those low riders cruising at half the speed limit, then come back to South Africa and tell all my buddies that America is filled with slow old people that can't drive, that would make me an idiot right?
TB and Aids are major issues in SA (and in the rest of Africa)....probably due to the fact that a large amount of the country's population basically still choose to live like they used to way back in the day when the Romans took over the world. This will most likely never change (well not in my / our lifetime at least), and it's hard to stay healthy and educated about risks in those environments / conditions.
I've been to the States a few times and Europe also and despite the negatives, SA in my opinion is still one of the better spots you can find yourself on earth if, like me, you can't really afford your own tropical island.
I'm sure you have neighbourhoods even in your own city that has equally shitty living conditions and comparable health issues.
Come visit SA anytime, just stay out of the shit holes...and wear a condom if you absolutely have to sample the local wildlife; you'll be just fine.
