Missing 3rd gear

Went to the track last night. Had a lot of fun, but other than that nothing to brag about. Best run so far was 10.99 and best mph was 138 mph. I need a lot of practice mostly. Also need to learn how to launch when I can't hear my engine so well. Gonna practice on some back streets with my headphones cranked up.

Here's the thing though, I keep missing 3rd gear. I never miss 3rd on the street. Anyone else have this problem? I might not be shifting hard enough, but one time, after crossing the line in 2nd, I held the clutch in all the way and it seemed like it still didn't want to go into 3rd at first. Maybe that was just because I had already missed it. Anyone got any ideas? Oh ya, still ran a 11.4 in 2nd gear, lol.

I have noticed some times that under pressure (in my head) that I do not fully allow the shifter to release. This does not allow the ratchet system of the shifter to grab the next gear.
Next time try to concentrate on the release in between shifts or raise the shift lever a notch.

So I'm basically letting the clutch out too soon you think? I tried on the highway some and it won't stick. I think it's like you said, under pressure. I'm still way to nervous at the track. I need more runs. A couple of times it felt really stuck at the end of the run though, but I'm not 100% certain.

I have found when close to red-line it won't shift from 5th into 6th.

Could possibly high RPMs have anything to do with making it hard to shift into the next gear? I don't know.

I think the RPM's have a lot to do with it. I noticed going from 2nd to 3rd today that the higher the rpm's the more pressure it takes to shift. Also seems like if you're above redline it won't shift at all sometimes.

I've been shifting with the clutch, gotta get out of that habit still.

Dragrace shifting 101:
Once you master the launch...perfect shifts are next! Under full throttle acceleration, apply pressure with your foot to the shift lever. The lever WILL NOT move into the next gear until you let off the throttle. This will take some practice, but once you're able to just blimp the throttle off VERY quickly you will bang off a very quick shift and never miss a beat of acceleration! This is all done WITHOUT touching the clutch of course. If you do this at the perfect rpm of your bike....you'll be golden! Crotchrocket is not the only racer around here. LOL Anything to add Rick?

I've powershifted on the street some I just never thought about it at the track. Only been to a track at all 3 times, maybe 10 runs on the strip, so I'm still working out the jitters. Figured out one of my boneheaded problems, launching with my right foot on the peg instead of my left. Made it very hard to get into shifting position obviously, lol.

I used to miss shifts on my old bike at the track (01 zx6r). My problem was 1st to 2nd. I've had my 14 jump out of 1st before on the street. I think I get a lazy foot sometimes. I've noticed that the 14 does take more pressure on the lever to get it to shift than my old bike. I guess it's a kawi thing. I haven't noticed this on other makes of bikes, Suzuki, Yamaha. When I launch, I have both my feet on the ground. I can get my feet back on the pegs and in position pretty quick though. That's never been a problem for me. I have never liked the "captain morgan" pose while waiting to launch

I've noticed something else that might be causing my missed shifts. I think I may not have been lowering my foot enough after the shift into 2nd. I think that's why I've never missed 2nd on the track and only 3rd.

I think I'm going to continue launching with my left foot in the shifting position. I have trouble getting my foot in just the right shift position with all the G-force during the launch. Even during normal riding my foot doesn't fit under the shift lever easily with my boots on.
