Poll Question:
Choosing parts for your bike...

OK, now this may sound wacky to some. But I'm curious about how people choose a part to put on thier new bike. Or any bike for that matter.

So the question is do you choose a part by who makes it? Or the look of it? Or the cost?
ETC.

i choose parts based on price, money is no object sometimes. the higher the price, the more likely i am to buy it. this is for the zx-12 though, i am not inclined to spend money on the 14. actually, i feel guilty filling up the 14s gas tank.

But if 3 companies made the same part, and you had to decide on one of them, which one would make your decission?

History with the manufacturer is important, hence why I initially wanted and had oredered a muzzy pipe for my Bikke.
I hadn't even heard of Brock.
I spoke to some here that had dealt with brock and then when Muzzy Racing started dicking me about , so I took a chance based on the information I had aquired here at ZX14.com, I cancelled my order and I went with a Brock... couldn't be happier.

As with most things form and function are important, and for me probably more so than price.... I can always justify the price to myself if I really want something. "But honey, the ZX14 is the bike I have to have" lol

WOW, I did the same thing, had a Muzzy Ti/Ti on order for 6 weeks and hearing all the good stuff about Brock I cancelled the order. Later I ordered Brock's in CF and ceramic coated.

But this is interesting.

All of of the above.

All of those factors are important, but several of them overlap. Quality, internet info, friends info, and bikeland boards, are all sort of the same thing. Anyway, I go by greatest value, where value is defined as:

quality^2 / price = value

And:

quality = internet info + friends info + personal experience + (bike shop recommendations / 2)

That help any or just make you wish you hadn't asked?

Is it functional? If so how does it look. How much does it cost? Is it good value for the bux? Is it safety related? Whats the Mfg history?? Do I really want it? Do I really need it? Can I make it myself? I am a non believer in the old trite saying "You get what you pay for." This is my think process when lusting after something bike related.....TB

I agree, that saying is WRONG! You don't always get what you pay for, but you MUST pay for what you get! No free lunches, despite what liberals would like you to believe.

I have people I'll listen to and judge buying parts upon.

Most don't fall into that category and going with the popular (at the time) product doesn't buy a ticket.

Sorry, but I do believe in the saying "You get what you pay for".

Buy cheap, you get cheap. Buy quality, you get quality. Has nothing to do with the actual price tag.

The Ying and Yang pipes were a perfect example. A couple people say they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and make 20 HP more than any pipe on the market and 3 months later you've got a hundred people bitching about the piss poor quality and fit/finish.

All the while a thousand happy Akrapovic buyers are smiling.

Read and learn. Learn and read.
