Is this the reason for the rattle sound I hear especially when I start the (cold) engine? I've been thinking it's the cam chain tensioner since most of the sound vanishes when the engine gets warmer. It never really disappears, though. The tip-over sensor has been checked and fixed.

Typically, this adjustment would be made cold.
Does the manual specify whether to do it cold or at operating temperature?

If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.

Book just says at idle, but since I ride with a warm engine I will adj with a warm engine.......when the oil is thinner.

The start up rattle from the cam tensioner is gone - haven't heard that for over 5000 miles now......

Smokin, apart from the improvement in sound, can you feel any difference in smoothness of the motor higher up the rev range?

This is good info- I read the old post about the knocking sound- I've been hearing the exact same thing and it drives me nuts. It sounds awful(stock pipes so it's easy to hear) riding slow and easy in city traffic. The only thing that concerns me is the adjustment- this thing is on an eccentric shaft so it probably doesn't matter but I tried adjusting mine and found that the thing behaves the same whether you adjust it clockwise or counterclockwise, it whines when you get too far either direction, then it stops when you back off. Can someone with a manual scan the page(s) with the proper procedure for this gear lash adjustment? Also my old ZX11 manual says to do this adjustment with the engine cold. Anybody know why?The alignment/timing is not an issue since the cases haven't been split but I would like to try adjusting the lash so I can be as happy(but not as fast) as Smokin. I'm about to throw this poor bike under a truck

You are right it is on an eccentric shaft and i really don't think it matters what way you tune it to set it ...But i'm with you i would like to see what the book said about setting it..Smokin

My knocking sound became #2 Rod Bearing 3450 miles on it at the time. That was the first zx-14 to come out of PHILLY. The bike is in the shop being fixed so if your bike is knocking on cold starts and then goes away. GET IT CHECKED OUT BEFORE IT'S TO LATE!

I assume the procedure is the same as the Concours. there is a good deal of info about doing this adjustment there.

The procedure should be the same for the new Concours, since it will use the same/similar engine, not sure about the earlier models.

I adjusted mine- no change whatsoever, still has this unnerving tock-tock-tock when warmed up, running about 1500-2500 rpm in lower gears decelerating(as in stop and go traffic). Took it to the dealer today and he said it sounded normal to him. He is going to contact Kawasaki and call me back. I'm not real thrilled about this, the bike runs great but it's going to bother me unless I put a smeg on it to cover the sound up. There is no sound when cold and no sound when starting up, and no sound at idle.

Will do. The dealer(who has been as helpful as possible) called back and he has contacted Kawasaki who said they have only had 1 other case like this(?) and they pulled the engine down and found nothing wrong. They said to keep riding and let them know if it changes or gets worse. Problem is, riding season is about over here for a few months(Ohio).

I did the balancer shaft adjustment a few minutes ago. It was off a little, like an 1/8 turn. I didn't really hear a change in the little knock noise though. I think it might have helped a little, but it's still there. I only hear it at idle after the engine has completely warmed up. It seems to be getting better the more miles I put on it. I have 790 miles on it right now. We'll see how it does after I get 1000 miles on it and I start taching it up more.

I would change the oil and look for metal flakes in the old oil.

I've already changed the oil at right around 500 miles and it was clean. It was making the noise before I changed it, somewhere around 250 miles. I don't think it's anything serious because I don't hear it when riding. If it was a bearing, it should get louder with the rpm's. It just annoys me not knowing what it is. Anything else I can check?

relax, you are probably hearing your massive tranny gears/clutch plates doing their thing in neutral. does the noise go away when you pull in the clutch or have it in gear with the clutch in?
