Things that make you say Huumm
Well it's been 6 months since I took delivery of the 14 and I just wanted to pass on information that I'll bet some here did not know.
1. After 15,000 miles the ZX-14 engine will loosen up (a good thing) however the 15,000 mile check is a requirement. My VFR I could get a way with 48,000 miles and even then that dam thing was in spec.
2. Oil in the Air filter is caused from over filling the oil. I swear I only filled it to the top however that was before the center stand so I'm most likely guilty there. From what I understand oil a little on the high side has a tendency of foaming up. Shop Suggests mid-way to ¾ of the dipstick. Is this very common?
3. I'll be dammed, WD-40 is a great lubricant. My chain looks good as new and cleaning the bike is easier. Chain-lube in the past could be a bitch cleaning. I can't remember who suggested this (my bad) Thanks.
4. Here something I'll bet most did not know, at a stop you CANNOT put your 14 in 2nd gear. How did Schmuck-O figure this out? OK bright boy here parked the bike in a rough area last week. I figure most people leave their bike in 1st or 2nd gear, me (well if I can get her there) I'll leave her in 5th or 6th. That way a quick get away.... well is not so quick. To my surprise at a stop 2nd gear NO CAN DO.
5. Brake pads are about 40% gone. Remember Schmuck-o here put 7000 miles on the ZX-14 in 9 days, but it's nice to know these pads are holding up well. Also I figured out why the rear brakes suck. Under hard braking stoppies is the norm.
6. Heat is no longer a problem, I figured it would cure itself once the engine was fully broken in.
Going for another 3.5 years or 84,800 miles whichever comes first.

I heard WD40 MAY be bad for the o-rings, but I'm gonna trust you guys on this, chain lube is a mess and overpriced. WD40 is CERTAINLY a better lubricant if it doesn't hurt the rings.
I found out about the 2nd gear issue in the... oh no, don't say it... MANUAL! They call it a "Positive neutral finder." Guess it's kinda handy once you know it's there.
I'm a little worried about that 15k mile maintenance. Don't trust the bike shop but not sure I want to attempt it myself. Time to call my mechanic buddy and bribe him with free alcohol.

I've used wd on my last few bikes with no issues, won't hurt the o-rings

feed him the booze AFTER he wrenches:P
wd40 may dry o rings, or swell them till they split, but honestly, every season or 10k, its gonna get new chain and sprokets, wheel brgs, suspension fluid, and lubed suspension linkage anyway...
The speeds I ride, failure of any type regarding chasis could be deadly.
I've covered 430 km in 2 hrs ride time (2:15 actual total time to fuel up 1x and have a smoke):P several times this summer... average speed 135 mph, and probably 30 min of that was around 165 mph, topping out on the limiter countless times....
ask me how to burn up a bt-014 in 5hrs, and 1100km.... no burnouts
rough pavement, 39 PSI, tire spins after every frost heave/ bump in the road!

I had trouble on the Busa with WD-40. The chain was getting real hot. I still use WD-40 to clean the chain, and then I wipe it after every ride with 90 wt gear oil. It seems to work well. When I just used the WD-40, it seemed that the chain was pretty dry after 100 or so miles... With the gear oil it stays on the chain, and keeps it lubed.... I amy be wrong but it was a trial thing and my chain seems to be like new... of course I only have 5000 miles or so... but I haven't blacktopped my driveway yet... so I tend to get a lot of gravel on the chain. (I live about 8 acres back off of my property so it is a long drive in the gravel...

Had over 8000 miles on my Busa with just wd 40 and chain was like new. But this is about as worthless as a which Oil should I use thread. IMO

I don't use WD, I use PJ Blue...but I clean the chain with kerosene 1 or 2X a season and do a quick wipe down each time I ride/lube. Chain always looks new and on my last Busa, I sold it at 30K KM's after 1 season of riding and the chain was perfect. Never had chain issues on all the rides I've had before. I also never see fly off from the chain...my 10R and 14 chains are sparkling all the time. I agree with Bentley on this thread...been hashed about a million times on every board in the world.

Last 30-40 years, 85-135 multi gear/factory spec. Messy as hell.
Maybe I should try WD and 0-20 vis Mobile 1 at the next Texas Mile?

Kent Scholtz, told me that he uses WD40 some years ago. For me this was my first time that I did not use anything but WD40. I've adjusted my chain twice and both sprockets and chain look excellent. I've never gone further than 26,000 miles on a chain, I'm thinking I may make 40K but time will tell. Thanks for all the good information.

back in 1987 I got a new yamaha fzr 1000 with some tar on my super trapp header and I cleaned it off while cold with some wd40. a friend came over wanting to go for a ride so I forgot to wash it off. I started the bike while I put on my jacket and gloves and got on my bike just in time for the fireball to erupt catching the whole enjine and fairing on- fire. thank god the hose was on nearby because I jumped off the bike put my pants out and got the fire out real fast before to much damage was done ....I think about that every time I reach for the wd 40...I will clean up the grease on my chain anyday

You must have had a large pool of the WD40 somewhere or something else crazy happened. No way you should have a fire hazard by putting it on your chain, or by putting it on your header if done in a reasonable manner.

I've cleaned my headers plenty of times with wd-40 to get shoe rubber off and never even worry about it catching fire.

Back when I was in the Air Force we used to use WD-40 to clean the engines of all our vehicles. Just open the hood and spray down anything that was dirty, and close the hood... With the engine cold of course. Never had a problem with fires and our engines all stayed shiny new looking just like the outside of the vehicles. Then again, we only drove them on the flightline so never exactly ran them WFO... Ran most of them 20+ hours/day over three shifts (sometimes 2 shifts), again never had a single fire...
