Squeaky front wheel

I've noticed for a little while now than when I'm coasting to a stop I can hear a slight high pitched squeaking noise coming from the front wheel. It's not very loud and it's clearly dependent on how fast the wheel is turning as far as how fast the squeak is. Any ideas as to how serious this might be and how to fix it. It does this when I'm not applying the brake.

Sounds like pads on rotors maybe?

I have the same thing and it is not brake related. Applying or not applying brakes around 15-10 mph does not change the frequency of the sound. It really only leaves the bearing. I plan on asking the dealer in the spring when I take it in for final warranty work (oil leak, faulty gear indicator, and front bearing).

dry bearing, seal, or seized caliper, is one rotor hotter than the other?

Hmmm..... i remember mine did that before i washed my wheels for the 1st time.
It was a faint squeak like some shopping carts make .
Haven't heard it since...

I have it too...but it's the pads in my case and though I cleaned 'em up...I still have it. I need to remove the pads and scrub 'em. I also have a slightly warped rotor which is being changed under warranty...amazing how that can degrade the braking.

Brakes don't affect the noise at all so I'm thinking bearing seal too. I'll check the rotor temps next time I'm home but I really don't think that is it because I don't feel any drag at all.

you won't feel drag, ecxept if you have it on the front stand, and it could go away when the brake fluid cools, just enough friction to make one rotor feel warmer than the other.
The brakes don't need to be applied for a caliper to drg on the rotor, it'll just saty there after your last brake application

Steve, if you have only one warped rotor, unless it became bent physically, - damage- a stuck caliper could be the cause too.

Most manufacture's won't replace brake parts under warranty, I had one bent rotor on my truck, and faught witht the dealer, it only had 40,000 k on it...
I told them to check the caliper bushings... sure enough they replace then too .... under warranty.
They tried, an with 99.9 % of all people they get away with it,
I used to be a mechanic and had to persuad them... once they heard my explanation they knew I'm not nieve.

The rear rotor on my bike was bent too, it would squeek, only after ridden a while though and the rotor became warm, then it chirp .

single chirp..... with every rotation.

chirp chirp chirp, with wheel speed.

A dragging caliper on a straight rotor will be constsnt noise.

I haven't checked for warp, or drag.
Maybe we should ask for ceramic rotors and bearing, under warranty of coarse?

Noise caused by a dragging pad or warped rotor would change frequency with application of the brake. The noise I have does not change one iota, and only occurs at a certain speed for a small range of speed, with brake heavily engaged or not. I also have clamped on the brakes from 100+ with no rotor vibration. Some of us have bearing squeaks, it has come up before. Turning a certain way increases the noise on mine, but no difference with braking pressure.

Ceramic bearings aren't typically in the budget for the average hobbiest. Maybe if you're name is Ricky or Ryan... but not Matt, Steve, Joe, Jim-Bob, etc.

I noticed the noise after a prolonged rain ride. Spayed a tiny squirt of lube on the bearing seal and it went away. I will apply some grease to the seal next tire change

phytrax if you get ceramic rotors you will certainly be happier than most other riders here. i sprung for the iron ductile ferodo braketech rotors for the 12, and was hoping for a set of the ceramic versions for the 14. i dont think that an average street rider would utilize the full efficiency of ceramics, but theyre still awesome rotors. hey man, if you buy a set then i will too!
ive been scrutinizing the stock calipers for a while now but i think that they are pretty good for oem. i was going to go with a new brembo master and calipers but i may stay stock. since i went all out with the zx12 brakes im kind of jaded and want the best for my 14.

I don't think I'll be getting ceramic rotors unless I'm forced to by the stock rotors warping more than once. How much would ceramic run anyway? I wouldn't think the bearings would be all that much, but I'm sure the rotors are in the $1000 range huh?

Only 100 mph... :P

Ive had the rear come off the ground at that speed
Not some stunting balance stoppie, just picked up the rear, and when i felt it , I let off, and it touched down a little crossed up.

With 16/41 gearing I was getting 0 -175 gps mph, back to zero under 1km, or 3300ft ...
3/4 mile = 3960ft
typically squeeling dragging pads change frequency with speed, and go away under brake pressure. :P
If it gets louder... there is NO pad left!

yes, if it happens while turning, its because the bearing is side loaded.

It is a well known fact that the factories are notoriously cheap in the lubrication dept.
Most seasoned motocross racers pull all wheel brgs, suspension lnkge, swgrm brgs, headstay/strg brgs and l;ube the works before the bike ever hits dirt. for this reason.

Almost every spring the mx magazines have articles on how to prep your NEW dirt bike and its comprised mostly of lubing everything.

I agree that brake pad noise should change when you apply brakes. I kinda thought from the start that a bearing needed lubing but I didn't want to hear that. I'm not eager to pull apart my 14. For starters I don't have a good lift. Can someone recommend a good way to jack up these bikes to work on them, change tires, etc. I have an ATV jack for my KLR650 that works fantastic, but I can't get it under the 14 with the fairings. Suggestions?

Mine developed the squeel this past summer. I made a mistake and left the disc lock on the right rotor. Took off and bang - no brakes. THe next day we took the rotor off and straightened it out - no more squeel on light braking now.

Mine had that squeel and it was the oil seal that had dried out on the spacer collar. Easily fixed with a fresh dab of grease on the seal lip.

Fixed the problem more easily than I thought. Just squirted some WD40 on the axel and spacer collar. 30 sec fix. Just be careful about getting WD40 on the brake rotor. I did, which I had already considered. Soon as I got out of my driveway I sped up to 40 or so and grabbed the front brake and had no brakes for several seconds until the WD40 burned off.

WD40, stops the squeaking and stops the stopping!

I was curious about that actually. I figured I'll grease the bearings when I change my tire. That shouldn't be long enough to cause a problem.
