Barnett or OEM Clutch, which one should I buy?

I blew out my cluctch completely on saturday night drag racing. I am wondering if I should buy the Barnett or stick with OEM? The OEM obvioulsy isn't that special considering I only have 2200 miles and I have read others who lost theres with 1200 miles so I it makes me wonder if that Barnett may be better?

They have always been much better quality.. More consistant and reliable.. In the old days Barnett clutches would get hot and swell pretty bad to.. That made for a grabby clutch and not worth a shit at the track..

Yep.

D) Hookers - does not apply here so I will excuse you for not having that as an option (but only this once).

My experience with Barnetts are that for racing purposes they dont last as long.
Go OEM.

Tony
Take a look at the ZX-11 fiber plates. I was comparing my old 11 clutch to the one I took out of the 14. The ZX11 plates have more than twice the fiber and measure the same size ,and thickness,as the 14. The steels from the11 don't look like they would fit but the fibers do. You would have to buy the thicker and narrower friction plate for the spring at the bottom of the hub specifically for the 14 but you could replace the other fibers with the 11 plates. Maybe someone out there has done this and could give you more positive information but It looks to me as if it would work. My 11has over 200 runs on the clutch and I got only 25 out of my 14. Same rider, same clutch technique, different clutches. Go to a dealer and look both plates. If I had looked at the 11's plates before I bought the new 14 clutch I would have tried it.

Tony, like the others said the OEM is the best quality!!!

The more you DragRace the better you will get and the longer your clutch will last !!!

Buy a couple sets of clutches so you dont have any down time!!!

Denver what year is your 11??? You measured both/comparing both 14 and 11 fibers???

I was there watching Tony race the dude a few times before his clutch went, I think what may have contributed to the failue was all that dayum nitro in the air his opponent sprayed during each pass.....but it smelled good anyway

CrotchRocket,

My ZX11 is a 1992 C model. When you lay one plate over the other one, they are a PERFECT match. I measured 8 plates from each clutch(stacked together) and they both measured .902 The tabs on the 11 plate are .046 and the tabs on the 14 are .046 also. The measurement of the outer circle to the inner circle on the 11 is .485 and the 14 is .485 too. The thickness of the 11 plate where there is no fiber is .076 and the 14 is .076. I have to figure out how to post a picture. They appear to be identical in every measurement, but you just won't believe how much more fiber the 11 has.

I couldnt find a dealer around here with 14 and 11 fibers in stock to compare...thanks. Isn't more fiber contact patch going to make the clutch grabby? I thought that was the problems with the barrnetts?

That is exactly what I don't want. My 06 GSXR had a very sticky clutch and I hated it. I would make a pass and it would nose over every time cause it would grab too early and drop the rpm's. Then I would have to listen to everyone tell me that I need to let the clutch out slower. Fuck, let it slower, it was either on or off. Not a good setup for drag racing. I absolutely love the feel of the 14 clutch.

My 11 clutch is phenomenal and it is not the least bit "grabby". I sent you the pictures of the plates to look at. The only thing I can figure out about the 14 having less contact area on the fibers is that it would allow more oil between the plates. In theory it should run cooler and last longer. In practice it didn't work for me. When I burn up the new 14 clutch, I'm at least going to try it. The 11 also has a quicker 60 foot by a full tenth than my 14

Used to run Barnetts in my 86 GSXR. Would take the steels out after I got back from the drags and bead blast them. But that was back then, and the bike was like 72" long, so grabby wasn't a problem.
All this clutch talk, I just ordered the oem from Ryan Schnitz. Will wait until next season to put it in. Still not slipping after 100+ runs.
