swing arm extensions vs. extended arm

is there any pros or cons? can a section of chain be added to my stock chain with master links and be safe? i know i have to relocate license, i will make my own lowering links. my bike ,aka ,the bluemax, is already lowered. how bad will this affect the cornering, i am not a knee dragger but i don't want to have to creep around corners. i am trying to improve my 60' to 1/8 mile times, not very consistant, it likes to wheelie and chicken shit lifts, once i get to second it's a piece a cake. sometimes it will spin in second. going to get all BROCKED OUT this winter so i can go play with bently

If you have the money buy the swingarm. I bought extensions for mine and i'm happy with them but this winter i'm going to underbrace my stock arm to help with it flexing. Depending on how far you want to stretch the bike you need to buy another chain. You can get a non o-ring chain for about 100 bucks and there lighter than the o-ring style, they just need checked more often. Buy the adjustable lowering links because if you really want to go low you will have trouble with the tire rubbing the undertail. Lastnight i ran my best 60 of 1.432 but was having to pat the throttle to keep the front end down. Depending on your weight throw some gear on the bike, pipe and run the crap out it!!! Good luck

Here is a place that seems real reasonable on pricing if you want to stretch your stk arm and brace it:

http://www.thompsonscustomcycles.com/index.html

Stretch it, underbrace, and powdercoat =$700

Do not go with a thompson arm...my cousin had one on his 1000 and the arm was welded up too wide, you could not get the axle nut on all the way. You couldnt get a cotter key in the axle and he ended up stripping 3 nuts off. Try a Macintosh or a Adams arm both good arms...kinds of pricey...but worth the money. The extensions are fine but the wall thickness of a 14 arm is thin. when we picked up the new arm from Macintosh for my cousins 1000 to replace the thompson...he said that was some of the thinest stuff he ever seen for a swingarm. You can stand behind my bike and watch closey when it starts to wheelie and see the arm flex alittle..not alot...but it does. My bike is 7 inches over...to be honest anything stretched with a moderate amount of power should have a underbraced swingarm. I'm 235 suited and have gone as fast as 9.23 with just airshifter,pc,exhaust, gear and shimmed clutch. The bike has went 9.00 with a 170 pound rider. You should see the same results if your a good rider.

Thanks for the info Halvefast. I think i'm going to underbrace my own arm and powdercoat it myself. I'm going to try out those sears powdercoating systems. All you need is a old/crappy stove you can use to bake the stuff on. You ever used one of these?

Bently i got a buddy at work that races at byron, his name is Todd Meyer,he's trying to get me to start up racing there. over the winter i will try to get my bike set up for it. Nothing to wild
maybe just a extended arm and lowered a bit.
Any ideas on how much i can extend the arm and still have a decent street bike? I'm a light weight at 160lbs. I was thinking a 0-6" arm? Stu.

Well I'm going 4 inches, but I know that will ruin how it handles, but oh well. It will still be streetable just not good in the curves. Hopefully you make it to Byron, sounds like a real good time.

I like extensions, they come on\off easy, inexpesive. Ill admit whole arm does look better. But as far as problems with extensions i love mine and cant feel any difference than a stock 1. No wobbles or anything.

I have extensions and they seem fine. Got the set on E Bay for less than 200 bux. I just extended my chain. I got an extra stocker chain and just used a section from it to extend mine. If you do this and use the clip type master links, get them from a Suzuki place. They are beefier than the ones you get from Honda. I like this setup, as it is easy to revert to stock if you want, and I have confidence it will hold up fine. My Bud has the same setup on his Busa and Hasnt had a problem for many miles including drag strip time...TB

Now the question would be how long of a extension?(swingarm)
Like i probely go 170# max suited up. Wouldn't too long of a arm cause my tire to spin more
for lack of down pressure(weight?)

It depends on how you want to ride the bike. The longer you stretch it the easier it will be to go fast out of the hole....traction limited. The longer the bike is the harder it will be to get traction, but the easier it will be to launch. You will see bikes stretched 2-12 inchs....usually. I have seen guys stretch bikes out 20-24 inchs but it looks retarted and there is no point in it. A good stretch is anywhere from 2-10. Guys can bitch and moan about wheelbase but it all comes down to what you want. If your not racing in any events go with what you like. I have roaring toys ext on my bike and the max you can go out with 16/44 gearing is 7 inchs. I'm going more next year and going to a better tire. The swing arm it's self flexs at 7 inchs out and my 235 pound ass....

Don't tell me that. I just sent a ZX6R arm out for them to stretch and under brace. Did your cousin try and have them correct the problem?

They told him to send it back and they will look at it and see if it was their fault or not. It was...but we didnt want to wait 6 weeks for them to fix it and have it rechromed. Not saying this will happen to everybody...just his experance. I dont think they jig them up...I think they just weld them off the table. I know of 2 people that wasnt happy with their arms.

They are going to have mine done and shipped back tomorrow. 2 weeks in the shop. The guy I spoke with said they give life time warrenty's on their work so if it's not right you bet you ass it's going back. When welding aluminum it is very easy for the material to flex or pull with the extreme heat it takes to weld it. I'm guessing you had them do the chroming as well so you didn't have a chance to test fit before making it look pretty.
