ZX14 clutches after 170 passes!!!

This is what SmokinZX14 removed from his 14 after 170 passes

OK, let's talk about these clutches...The 1st fiber on the table is smaller than the rest?...Am I seeing that right???...Now the 2nd thru 9th fibers are the same size as the 10th fiber but looks like the fibers are worn away at the bottom of the plate???...The 10th fiber contact are larger than the rest and look like in good shape!!!

The 1st and 2nd steel plates on the table look good for 170 passes!!!...The rest are burnt pretty good, but way better than a ZX12...Back in the day I used to change clutches on the 12 after 30-40 passes and the steels were all purple-much more than smokin's clutches after 170 passes...

I'm sure in time smokin will get 200+ passes and the steels will look like the 1st steel in the pic

Smokin, explain the pics to us!!!...Thanks!!!

wow, that's alot of passes. I hope mine can go that long, that's the reason I wanted this bike. My corvette would get 15-18 passes and I'd drop a thou replacing the clutch.

I'll be the first to admit I have no idea what I'm talking about, but in Daytona the tech told me that the 14's clutch has bigger holes for better lubracation. I'm guessing that a nicely lubed clutch wears less. Hope this makes sense to you all.

Blue mule not to hi jack a thread but what year corvette? I think I shit the clutch out of mine last weekend. Smelled really bad after a pass. let it sit awhile then drove home, never really had a chance to get on it again. Sucked to I put a 9 sec cuda on the trailer first round then did not want to run it second round.

Hi guys here we go ... The little clutch plate that Rick asked about is the deepest one in the clutch pack ..The reason it's smaller is there is a clutch cushion that fits inside of it .... The larger clutch plate is the first one in the pack or the first one you see when pulling the clutch out .. The reason it's bigger is because it runs on the pressure plate that's made of alum ...The other 9 plates are all the same size ... As you can see in the pictures the inside ones took the biggest hit and were worn the most ...They were worn down to 0.114 to 0.111 .....Smokin....

Steve it was back together today ..But i had a fuck up when i put my new rear tire on.....Now i have had the back tire off at least 15 times in the past...But today i fucked up bad, i put the tire on and didn't get the rear brake stay in the grove ....I must has not seen the brake stay go under the grove.....I took a test ride and the first time i het the rear brake the bike locked up and started an out of controll slide !!!!!!! I allmost went down !!!! I had to walk a mile back home and get a 12 mm wrench so i could pull the brake line off and release the trapped brake fluid out of the locked up caliper .... I was able to ride it home after that ..... It made a big mess of my brake line.... So now i have to go get a new brake line and clean up the mess ... I suck !!!!! ..Smokin...

I got 25 runs out of my clutch and they were burned and warped worse than the ones in Smokin's pictures. I truly believe that a stock bike with the flies in is harder on a clutch than a modified bike with a gear, flies removed and a pipe. Here in Denver I have to leave the line at 7000 rpm and slip the clutch like mad to make any power. My modified ZX-11 has over 200 runs on the clutch and it is still working perfectly. I bought the ZX14 replacement clutch from Schnitz shipped to my door for $242.00. At that rate it cost me ten dollars a run. I'm pulling the flies and Brocking the bike out next month!

CR- that is what I beleive it was flatoutbu was saying awhile back he replace 2-9 with the last plate to get more surface area with the clutch. Now everyone needs to remember you can adjust the stack height with thicker steels right from KHI 2.6 is stk they make thicker 2.9 and thinner 2.3 plates. I'm on my second clutch after 140 passes, used some outer plates mixed in with the inners, ony 2 due to that was all I could round up in a short time. Mine wasn't shot but just out of spec. If I had thicker steels I could have kept going on that oem clutch. Mine came out looking about the same as Smokin's, and I weigh alot more than him. And just installed a pipe at the same time as doing the clutch, so all those passes were with stock pipe and homemade resistor.

Yea i replaced all my fibers with the larger pad fibers. I only left the thin, inner most fiber in there to keep my chatter rings. Stack hight was almost perfect but you could run the thicker steels with the larger pad fibers because the outer most fiber is a tad thinner then the "standard" fiber. If somebody has both of them laying around and a dial caliper check this out and see if i'm right. My thinking is if you run the larger pad fibers you can run the thicker steels. I totally just went off eyeball when it came to stack hight, i was told the pressure plate was flush with the basket, and that's what i used for my measurements. Maybe that was alittle short and not enough spring pressure was causing me to burn steels? Just to let you guys know with this set-up i burned up 2 sets of steels and my fibers are still good. Maybe i'm just too hard on them and need to change my launch. The bike 60' good so.... I'll try and get some pics up of my last burnt clutch.

Lee, if you were to put all the same frictions as the last one above I'm sure your clutch will last longer...Maybe replace a 2.6 steel with a 2.9 and you'll get LONGEVITY!!!

Yes Rick 2 to 9 are smaller than number 10 plate ...Flatoutbyou put the number 10 clutch in place of the 2 to 9 plates and it seems to be working for him ....

Smokin I'm sure you probably said this in earlier post but what oil are you using?
I'd like to see pics of your bike and video as well.

Where do you set your rpm's prior to rolling on the throttle and releasing clutch?

I going to put a new clutch in maybe in Feb/March so I can start fresh next year for race season. May use a thicker steel in there somewhere in there.

Could you explain your launch to 60' technique? Maybe some of us "hard on the clutch" guys could learn something from you.

OK i'll give it a shot ......Stage at 5000 ... The clutch release is two stage ...First is to toss it out real fast to about 3/4 of full release.. That is what gives you a good 60 foot time .....The second part is a slow release of the last 1/4 of the clutch while at the same time twisting the throttle to full open .....If you release to fast ( it's wheely time)...To slow and your going to burn the clutch up ... The timing of this is something i can't put on paper , you just have to get to the track and start working on it ....Good part of the zx14 is you don't need a killer 60 foot to get go 9s ... A 1.60+ 60 footer will get you into the nines .....IF and that a BIG IF you get the throttle pined long before the 330 cones ......
Here is a trick i use to help me with that > Keep an eye on the 330 cone as you leave the starting line , take notice of when you get the throttle pined...If you are not pined before the 330 cone you are going to be slow...Use the 330 cone as a marker and try to get the throttle and clutch released long before you get to it with out a wheely ...If you wheely you did it to fast ...If you bog you did it way way to fast ..If the engine is free wheeling you are holding the clutch in to long .... Timing is everything ...
My shift points are 11,000 RPMs ...
One other tip> don't drag your feet ...Put them on the pegs ASAP ...Guys that drag their feet give up a lot of MPH on the big end ....Tuck in ASAP, get as tight as you can and keep your chin on the tank under the wind screen ...
There are three parts to the track .. First is the 60 foot .. second is the 330 and last but very inportant is the back half of the track ..You put it all together and you will go fast.. . Smokin...
