what am I missing here

Don't get me wrong, love my 14 and have no buyers remorse. But according to sportrider.com the 10r has only 7 less stock hp and is 100 lbs less in weight.

Also the rolling times are sickly faster on the 10r. 1/4 time is .07 slower for the 10r.

Plus I would imagine the 10r handles better.

So what am I missing here?

24lb of Torque? That is huge, but worth the weight difference, and handling?

JJ

This is the point Ive been trying to bang home.. Pound for pound the 10r is superior motor to the 12r and 14. Akrapovic list the 10r at 163.9 RWHP. Plus you can get a factory race intake cam and ecu. Im 6'4 inches tall so anything smaller than a 12r will never do for me. Fully piped, ignitioned, and tre'd the 14 will only make 5 more RWHP than a 12r at best.

To get the maximum out of your 14 go with a set of cams and get around the rev limiter by 600 rpms or more.. Then your talking over 200RWHP..

Your talking a race bike and a touring bike. The 10 is almost at it's limit on performance the 14 isn't close. Also the 10 will never make the torque the 14 will with similar mods. Touring bike /race bike take your pick there both fast...

My zx10 made 147 hp on the dyno and torq was low 70s ...It was a great bike but nowhere near as fast as my zx14...

I know I have ran many 10r and gixxers and 1 CBR 1000RR and neither of them was even close to the 14. I must admit, i could get in the curves quicker on the gixxer but the 14 is not bad. She holds in the turn like a small bike. Also, I ride about 240 miles on the 14 in horrible wind conditions and rode with ease but i put about 50 miles on the gixxer 1000 and my ass was dying. I have not had the pleasure of taking the 10 out but the 14 is what I have been most impressed by. Oh yeah, second gear at 60 is insane buddy. It's like a jet going into full afterburner the way in constantly pulls. It's flat out sick.

I had a zx10 2005 model, It doesnt even come close 2 my 14. The only thing the 14 needs is a brock pipe and itl rip. When i bought my 14 i was disapointed, you couldnt believe how much the stock exhaust holds it back. put a smeg on it . New bike.

Yup... torque, comfort, and stability at speed pretty much sums it up. If you want a pure carving machine or something for a roadrace track, simply buy the liter bike of your choice and you should be quite happy.

Ditto.
Smeg and flies out, HUGE difference from stock.

factor in that the zx10 is geared to hit the rev limiter in 6th at 175-180 mph.( 165 mph real world GPS or Radar)
The zx14 is geared for 202 mph (192 mph real world GPS or radar)

The zx14 puts more torque to the ground in SECOND gear than the zx10 or GSXR1000 in 1st gear, due to its lower gearing and 30 ft lbs more torque.(stock for stock)

with a 16 tooth on the front I'm grabbin 3 rd gear when the literbikes are just grabbin 2nd, but do to the wide ratio gearbox I still pull them on top end.
I usally get a 4-6 bike lead right off the start, and just keep widening the gap!

Gear the zx14 16/43 to acheive 172 MPH real world and the accelleration is unreal.
it will still have a few more MPH on top of the liter bikes too.
do the exhaust and flies and you have an unbeatable machine....

Oh and try launching literbikes consistantly as hard as I can the 14....
impossible!
Big clutch, lower CG, front bias weight distribution....
I be puttin down the power while they're tryin to get their beans together after the huge wheelie they just let off to control....

I am using 16/43 and .....shit it pulls!!!!! I don't plan to need over 180 so it was a good trade for me at this time. When I get used to it - learn how to control it - it will be unreal. When I slam the 2/3 shift it lofts the front tire :-)

In 102 days of owning the bike I have put on 8000 miles............couldn't have done it on the 10.....

Yes and yes.
Gear indicator is correct 1/2/3 and off by 1 in 4/5/6 - shows 3/4/5.....I can live with it.
Stock speedo is off, but ODO is very accurate. I am using a setting that is within 1% for ODO and speedo shows +2MPH at 65............good enough.

so what was your GPS top end for 16/43?

Btw guys...

Traction may become a very real issue with the 16/43 combo..
I have ran 16/41 and the tire spins ALOT..., have not ran 16/43 yet... just been lookin at the MATH.
so something to consider...

I own a 14 clown. re-read my post, I was asking a question if the 24 ft lbs really makes up for the weight and handling. From what I have got in responce is, first off the bike is actually 30lbs less than advertised in a spec sheet once you make the exhaust change.

The 10r probably is a better handling bike. Was mainly asking this because my buddy is shopping liter bikes right now. And he is considering the 14 as well. I will tell you this much after looking at the Yam/Suz/Kaw/Honda liter bikes today, the 10r is hands down the best one. And super comfortable. I am not sure how anyone rides an R1. The gas tank pokes me right in the solar plexes while laying down on it. Seems very uncomfortable.

I love my 14 and cannot wait to get my exhaust, PCIII and flies out this weekend.

JJ

-38 lbs, drop the bottom fairing too as it looks like sheit from left with big hole from missing pipe, .....
40lbs anyway.
The 14 is not a GP bike!
Its a muscle bike that is drag oriented, comfy, handles well and is damn fast when unplugged!
Great all round bike!

One key thing to remember - DO NOT FILL THE GAS TANK............I put in 3gals to hit the canyons. By using only half a tank you save the high up positioned weight of about 3 gals - about 18 lbs. Switching to dual CF cans I save another 15lbs.......33lbs right there.....

I have not tried a top speed run with the gears - have hit almost 150..........so it still goes there :-)

The 14 is for me the very best choice of bike. It is comfy enough - has range if you FILL the tank (I did over 1000 miles in under 16 hrs - twice in 2 weeks) - looks good - has more cc's than the class limited racers and a huge TQ advantage......etc. Just a nice "real world" machine. I have zero chicken strips and have hit the fairing on the ground twice (and the peg more) so the handling is there. I am considering CF wheels and it will pretty much put it in litre bike class.........

What?...the 14 is a touring bike? You shouldn't have said that...now I'm going to have a "touring" complex and take it easy in the twisties....damn!

Don't worry about what you read in magazines...these comparative tests are done with above average riders.
I blow away many sport bikes (600s and liters) through the twisties on my 108hp RoadStar Warrior. Most of these guys are all show and no go.

An experienced drag racer can run the 1/4 on a 600 and outrun a bike twice it's displacement. Take it for what it's worth.
