Radar Detectors

I know there was some reviews on radars a few week ago, but I am curious on are they really working, has anyone avoided a ticket? Also what about if you get caught in the rain, do you need to cover it up while you are moving? How is the mounting bracket? and how do you hear the thing while you are moving and listening to an mp3?

I am running the newest from bel.. 65 ,
I bought an extra windshield mount for cars, pulled the rubber cups out of it and ran 2 crews thru the wind screen, and have it mounted in this manner.
The mount is permanent, and stays on the bike at all times.
The bell has its own mounting mechanism, so it is solid , out of the way and stays dry under there, above the gauges.
I'll post pics later today if you want.
Was cheap, looks good, out of the way, and is solid!
If I ever sell the bike, I will just replace the windscreen, or tell them to buy a bel detector!

V1's working great, as always. Yes, many tickets saved over the years. Techmount "control mount" also working very well for me - and it doesn't look like a boner sticking up out of the stem blocking access to the key like their stem mount tends to do.

I have two Passport 8500's. An older one that I gave my wife and a new blue X50.

Saved my ass many, many times no matter what I am driving.

I use a H.A.R.D. system. No need to listen.

You need to pull it off and put it where it won't get wet when it rains. Not an issue because you shouldn't be speeding in the rain anyway.

In alphabetic order the best detectors on the market are Bel, Passport and Valentine. Ask somebody who owns one of those three and they will tell you (as I will) thats it's the best detector made.

Radar Jammer or make all of your bodywork out of radar absorbent material - like the F-117 and B2 stealth jets.

Radars are a waste of money -- don't forget those guys in the airplanes, the cops that wait on the freeway on ramp that zap you from the rear and instant on radar will also get 'ya with your peter in your hand.
You'll find yourself riding your brakes with a radar detector. By the time most radar detectors pick up the signal, you're toast. Not to mention the annoying false alarms.
Radar/LIDAR has a pretty dam good distance tag....you'd be surprised. And even if you have the "best" detector, you better have very damn good reflexes and hope you don't find yourself in a panic and lock your front brakes up ending up in a low side when that annoying detector lights up.

Wide empty roads around here!
220+ km /hr nonstop for 3 hrs except for fuel!
saved my license 4 times in that last trip! LOL
The trick is to make sure there is traffic in front of you, so your detector goes off before he tags YOU!
The great thing about bikes is you have to be much closer to the gun , for them to geta reading on you. under under 1/4 - 1/2 mile.
I watched the officer run in the ditch with a battery pack, and radar gun from 300 yds, and he was having a hard time getting a reading LOL.
Funny , I slowed down before he caught me for speeding , ran for nothing!

....run Forest run!

Yup, your comments are somewhat true while in the city, but I don't do much over-the-speed-limit riding in the city. Radar detectors can be very helpful in the country and on occasional interstates where troopers sample every 10th car and warn everyone for a 2-mile range with a good radar detector.

In the city, your best best defence is a sharp eye watching for those laser-toting cops hiding behind bridge pillars or on overpasses. The thing to remember with laser is that they must have a clean look at you, and if they can see you well, you can see them too. I live with the threat of laser each and every day on my commute to and from work... gotta keep them eyes open!

V1 or Bel on a techmount - you're good to go and will catch the lazy cops every time. For everything else (laser, pop, etc), you just need to keep your eyes on the road ahead.

No. A good radar detector WILL save your ass. Not always, but if you understand the game the vast majority of the time.

To say it won't is ignorance of the subject. Mine has saved my ass many, many times.

IF you know how to use it, it's your best friend. Common sense, knowledge of what vehicles are (and aren't) around you to pick up transient signals from, it is a complicated art to master, and yes, I am a master.

I'm not talking about hauling ass around some metro area (where it's not the safest thing to do anyway), I am talking about the vast expanses of the west where I live.

I regularly get transient Ka hits from 3.5-5 miles away where I go fast.

Listen to the chirp/light. A Ka hit in the middle of nowhere is not a fluke. There is a cop somewhere behind you or ahead of you and his gun is powered on and sampling or he zapped another driver/rider.

I don't presume to want to convince somebody that doesn't believe in radar detectors, but doesn't it seem a little foolish to own a modern sportbike that will never see (where safe) above the posted limit?

Might as well be riding a Harley if that is your mentality.

And one final observation. If you happen to be a cop, some of the biggest hooligans I have ridden with have a badge so if you are a cop, don't even go there. LOL

Okay, allow me to rephrase --- it's worthless to me.
Haven't had a speeding ticket in 25 years...and I haul ass...all the time. That's what one does with fast bikes. Never needed an electronic gadget to save or warn me from no radar/LIDAR totin' cop. I guess you could call it "street smart" But that's just me. I ain't no "cop" Carrying a badge doesn't necessarily get you out of trouble...but I'm sure it helps.

If you want to believe you are better at avoiding speeding tickets with your street smarts than a comparably street smart person with a good radar detector then more power to you brother.

The point I believe you are missing is that if you and I, two street smart dude's that know the game, haul ass around the same areas, me with good electronic protection, you with your wit's I am going to win that gamble.

It's pure math. Reaction time before you get locked on wins the bet every single time.

If you've been "hauling ass" for 25 years with just your wits without one single speeding ticket maybe your idea of hauling ass and mine differ?

So tell me your secret then Butch.

How can YOU haul ass all over Cali for 25 years without getting tagged while the rest of us mere mortals cannot accomplish the same?

I was hauling ass through an Orange Grove in the middle of fucking nowhere outside of Fresno with two of my buddies that live in Clovis and the ONLY thing that saved my ass was the Chatterbox screaming at me.

CHP sitting in the Orchards 40 miles from nowhere and if you were visual you MIGHT see him from 100 yards. Maybe.

Do not even begin to tell me that you can anticipate that.

So we're down to name calling now eh?..real classy....NOT! This doesn't need to get so nasty smarty pants. What?...I can't mention my fair dose of luck? Does this piss you off?...I'm so sorry, didn't mean to get your panties in a twist.
What more can I say other than I've been "LUCKY".
Must mention that I have been pulled over for doing 96 in a 70 and was let off ...again luck is the key word here....another stop was for doing 76 in a 45, got off again. Both times by CHP. starting to make some sense to you? I can send you a definition of luck and it doesn't mention skill or ability. Now quit being a knuckle-head about my "luck".
Let's see, I've been pretty much everywhere with luck and no gadgets..ie; Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada to name a few places I've blown through. Actually made it to Los Angeles from Monterey in 4 hours..now that's hauling ass and Monterey to Las Vegasin 6 hours and some change...now that's movin' and one more local distance land speed record of 1 hour 10 minutes from Monterey to Vacaville, CA
Lady Luck has worked for me in 25 years. But then again, luck is only good for so long.
I dare you to call me "Butch" again....come on I dare ya
cheers matey!

Oh! Wait a minute, I do use electronic gadgets....Garmin GPS loaded with latest and greatest. Personally programmed with "known" cop hide outs. You can find that info and download from the internet. Gotta love the internet.

Evrytime I see a cop shooting radar, my detetctor has ALLREADY beat me too it and alerted me, sometimes by 3 miles. Anybody can say what they want but a trained rider with common sense can combine his experience with the early warning bleeps and save your self a ticket. Most of the time including POP and laser as well. Key is when its a curvy or hilly road make sure there are cars in front of you. They will throw you fragments and your radar will give you a slight blip....thats saving you ass on laser. Also more and more cops are shooting from behind, unless you have a rear antenna mounted your radar likely will not even go off. With a good radar detector combined with common sense riding you can avoid most tickets than without a radar detector at all. Peace to all.

Hmmmm.....that must mean I have a common sense.
Behind the radar/LIDAR shoots are a sure loss to the detector depending rider that's for sure. Very well known CHP tactic....sit on the freeway on-ramp and watch traffic go by and zap..zap...zap...you're toasted and considered well done , then you wonder where'd he come from?banghead
