2008 GTR1400 about to be shown
Next week is the big show and FINALLY, pictures that don't look photochopped and some verbiage that may portend the touring version of the ZX-14:

Seems kinda stupid to have duals on the ZX14 and a single pipe on the GTR?

Not really considering it's market. The ZX-14 competes with the K1200S and we all know the two don't compare power wise. The market is the FJR1300 and the ST1300 from Honda, and neither of those is pushing more than 140 or 145 HP. 160 HP and keeping most of the torque, this thing will stomp the FJR and the ST in any performance category. They just need to make sure the comfort and amenities are there...

Here's the text of a descriptive article translated from Italian:
Kawasaki has its own take on Touring. The result is the new GTR1400 (2008 model year) that represents a totally new concept in high performance motorcycles: The Supersport Tourer.
Starting with an engine that offers breath-taking performance, impecable managebility, and an extremely comfortable riding position, the new GTR1400 incorporates technical solutions that make it unbeatable over long distances.
The new GTR1400 is built to a high standard, keeping true to the company's performance tradition. Thanks to being the first in its class to carry a VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system, and a variable distribution system (variable length induction???), the efficiency of the GTR engine is very impressive. Together the two provide power from very low and middle in the rev range, that'll stand your hair on end, as well as acceleration anywhere in the regime. Thanks to the new final drive system, via Tretra-Lever (similar to BMW's shaft drive???), that delivers power to the rear wheel with the same smooth action of a traditional chain drive.
Like its engine, the chassis of the GTR is based on the ZZR1400. There have been some modifications to the chassis and riding position to increase the comfort of this aluminum monocoque frame but its sport qualities remain intact. The new GTR 1400, as well as the ZZR1400, is dedicated to sharp handling thanks to the rigid chassis, the inverted fork, and other high tech touches. All this, combined with the latest generation ABS raises the braking to a level on par with the best Supersports, and make the new GTR1400 the only Tourer in the world with a monocoque, leaving the competition far behind.
In addition to Sport performance the new GTR1400 provides features like an electrically adjustable windshield, large capacity luggage, tire pressure sensors, KI-PASS (a swipe card ignition key), and an AC power source under the dash.
For those who cross countries and continents like others cross cities, the new GTR1400 gives more of everything than any other bike in its catergory.

Ya, you're right...wonder why they didn't just leave power alone though...not that it much matters, but the bike will be substantially heavier and could have used that extra grunt. But I agree in the sense that it wil stomp the FJR and -- well, anything can stomp the ST1300, what a dog that thing is, in every respect...typically Honda.

HP for top speed, torque for accelleration right? That being the case, they don't intend this bike to be capable of 200 mph like the ZX-14, but they damn sure want it to be able to do 0-60 and 0-100 faster than the competition. WIth 160 crank HP, the GTR will probably top out around 170 mph or so, and that's plenty fast for a sport-tourer, and faster than the competition, but at the same time it'll nail either the FJR or the ST in the 1/8 and /14 miles and in 0-60 times, making it the top performer of the bunch as well. Gotta consider the market again. Can't have an ST that competes with it's flagship bike. Have to leave the ZX as overall performance king in the lineup.

The 14 is every bit as much of a "R" model as the 12R it replaced. Which was never really an "R". Unless your talking about a ZRX1400, the only way there will be a ZX-14R is if they make a decal that says as much.

An then, it's just a decal. Ninja 250 is an "R". Ya right.

I'd have to agree with Redelk... the 14 is just as much an "R" model as the 12R is an "R" model ...
if the concept is that "R" traditionally represents "R"acing, then the real "R" model is a ZX-10R (and I own one of those too) ...
I'd suggest you plop your ass into the seat of a 10R and then you can firmly grasp the concept of the "R" model... at that point you will suddenly realize that NEITHER the 12R nor the 14 are truly "R" models...
I for one hope KMC doesnt go down that pathetic marketing path all the OEMs did in the early 90s, adding R's and RR's and RRRRRR's to everything
-what a waste of time that was! Might as well start painting the bikes miama vice pink and baby blue while we're at it.
Oh... and as for your statement for Kawasaki to build "what we want" I'm pretty positive they've done that already.
The only person really pissed off about the "R" is easyrider.... he owns a useless url
