Holed my radiator today

Damn... it was such a good ride to end it like this sucks!


Must have caught a stone, smelled something at a stop light.
But made it home, never flashed HOT, but just barely made it.

I've got to come up with a guard before I put it back together.
Does anyone know for sure if these can or can't be repaired?
I'm sure they aren't cheap to replace.
While I'm in there as good a time as ever to wire the fan to a switch.

Wow that sux! I've heard of motorcycle aluminum radiator repair shops, but never have had to see about one of mine being fixed. Here is a link I was sent a while back (and noticed the dude shows some before and after pics of his work):

I did not even bother to price one out.
Mine happened the same place almost identically, but on the other side....

JB weld.
I cut out the fins about 1/4 inch on either side of the hole, and used a dremel and roughed up the area, cleaned it well with brake cleaner, pinched the split slightly and applied JB weld. 2 coats 12 hrs apart, used emery cloth to roughen up the 1 st coat of JB weld once it cured. Then applied the 2nd coat.
Used a black paint marker to cover up the gray patch.

The local radiator shops told me there was a good chance they would burn the aluminum before they got the silfoss... high strength high temp soldering rod to melt.
Agreed that a good high temp epoxy would be the best bet.
I have put over 4000 km on it since .... good stuff!

I have seen people use JB weld to repair cracked clutch covers on dirt bikes, and epoxy putty to fill holes in truck differentials, and seems to work very well.
I know it seems like a temporary fix, but i have seen this stuff endure years of use.

I run Cox Racing radiator guards on both my bikes.

I can't speak for the 14, but a 12 radiator will cost you over 400 donuts. 430 if memory serves me correctly.

Good luck getting it fixed.I found several shops that would repair it, but none would warranty the repair. Doesn't do me much good 300 miles from nowhere.

the rad shop told me this is how they repair many of the aluminum rads on cars today, and have never had issue, as long as its prepped properly.
The Cox racing guard just became avail. last 7-14 days... otherwise I would have been running one.

I knew that a rad would be min. 2 weeks away, and the repaired part is stronger than the paper thin rad itself.

I pressure tested it to 18 psi, which is about 6 psi more than the system should ever see, unless the rad cap fails. Since I slightly pinched the hole shut with needle nose pliers, the hole epoxy will never see pressure over a wide surface area anyway, its just sealing a micro crack, not a hole.

Lots of construction and dirty roads where I live, and buying a new rad for $500 + dollars really would piss me off if it happened again.

If you prep it right and use high temp 2 part epoxy or JB weld it will not leak.

Damn! Just when I thought I had finished my mods for this year I gotta buy and install something else. I don't know whether to be pissed at this site cause all the good ideas are breaking my bank account or because all the good ideas are making my bike run better and safer. Anybody got experience with bolting one of these covers on the 14? Easy, hard?

Not the 14, but an R1 and zx-12r and I am sure the 14 install is very similar.and straightforward.

Basically you have to have a clean line of sight to the front of the radiator. The R1 and zx-12r guards have a mount for the lower radiator support and zip tie to the upper mounts. Very straightforward.

I had my plastic off when I installed them so it was a no brainer, but I probably could have installed both with just the inner fairings removed. Rule is if you can see the entire radiator up to and including the entire perimeter you are good to go.

It's repairable. Take it to a radiator shop. They'll pressure check it before it leaves the shop.
It can be fixed at home with a little solder and a torch. But it will take a few hit and miss tires before you get the hang of it?

The cox guard was about 85 bucks with shipping....Whats the downtime and the repair cost worth?

Had to pull the rad, to repair it properly....
cost me $15, but 1 day down, and luckilly it happened near work.
caught a ride home and picke it up with my truck.
PITA.

Also, coolant on my rotor, pads and frt tire... had to remove the pads and clean / scuff them.
Wiped down the rotors with brake clean too.

Coolant on your tires could take you down too....

Get a screen!
