Tragic

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_3119.aspx

Last night two guys on Bikes were doing wheelies on the Gardner Expressway in Toronto, when one looped it on top of himself.
The other guy lost control, dumped his ride and took off on foot leaving his pal who died from his injuries.

Performing Stunts On Highway Apparently Cost Motorcyclist His Life
Monday August 28, 2006
Performing stunts appears to have cost a motorcyclist his life in a tragic accident on the Gardiner Expressway.

Toronto Police say 31-year-old Elvis Rojas managed to flip the bike onto himself while popping wheelies on the busy roadway Sunday night. They say he wasn't racing, as was previously believed. Rojas died at the scene.

The Gardiner was closed near Fort York following the accident, creating a back-up that lasted several hours.

Traffic Services investigators are looking for more information in the crash and they're asking anyone who saw anything to call them at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

The fatal mishap comes only days after police in York Region released a videotape of the final moments in another deadly motorcycle crash in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

A video camera mounted on the motorcycle of one of the victims caught the images from the Feb. 6, 2005 crash, which occurred on Bloomington Rd. east of Kennedy Rd. The camera images show the motorcyclist accelerate, at which point the camera shakes violently and then shuts off.

In those seconds the motorcyclist lost control and hit another car head on - both the bike's rider, 29-year-old Gabor Werkmann, and a passenger in the car, 63-year-old Arnold Hall, were killed. The car's driver suffered serious head injuries.

Two other motorcyclists involved in the crash were found guilty of dangerous driving last week. Krisztian Nemes, 30, and Istvan Mihaly, 37, will be sentenced in November.

gunner, i wouldnt take it that far. it is a question of RESPONSIBLE stunting, same as responsible riding in general. u can stunt all u want in a safe place, like a quiet street in an industrial area after hours, or soemthing similar. but doing it on busy streets (which they love doing in many of the videos) is just retarded. no different from someone just riding fast (like in the double fatality video above).

unfortunately that "sport" does attract a bad character, the blame for which i put straight on the shoulders of the north american "pro" stunters that started the craze here. the sport started unorganized on the streets, with the best doing big standups thru heavy traffic on the freeway, filming it and selling their tapes at $30 a pop. of course proper gear, including helmets, is missing half the time. crashing and getting badly mangled is cool. kids see that shit and just latch on, thinking they'll get the hot chicks if they become big stunters too (which unfortuantely they seem to do).

the european scene is so different, at least from what i've seen. first of all, they're way better, tho the NA pros have been catching up. but in europe there is a proper, sanctioned stunt series, with pros who work with proper gear on a closed course. of course that's just my POV, and maybe the street scene there is just as stupid as here.

I agree! My local shop has Stunting BS tapes rolling 98% of the time. These kids all stand there and think exactly what you stated. WOW! I'll get the HOTTT chicks if I pull that shit off. It pisses me off to NO END! The shop is as much to blame as anyone around here.

I gotta agree with gunner, stunting has its place, which is putting on a show at some kind of event, track day, drag strip etc. I don't think it belongs on the street even after hours and a empty road. You don't see guys on dirt bikes doing back flips down the interstate. They save it for a show like x games. maybe someone needs to start something like that for sportbike stunters. thats the kinda of shit that will have insurance on bikes so high we will all be riding 125 cruisers.

....I'll go out on a limb here : stunting on a public roadway that is open to the public and used by the general public to operate their motorized vehicles in a lawful and legal manner is stupid....PERIOD...there is no such thing as responsible stunting on a public roadway unless its closed by permits...I envy the tremendous talent that these stunters have, but I don't appreciate them using the freeways and surface streets as theri personal stunting venue..."but there's nowhere else to do it!"...BULLSHIT!!!...go find a private parking lot and stunt there...don't forget to ask for the property manager's permission to use the parking lot and don't forget to sign your waivers releasing the property from any liabilities...take your chances there, not on a public roadway where your crashes tie up traffic and use valuable emergency services personnel time, energy, and resources to scrape your ego (e-goooo?) off of the roadway...pool your money together and hire a paramedic unit to stand by (like they do at legal venues)...quit mooching off of the public emergency services for your stuid mistakes....its stupid riders of all types who help jack up insurance rates.....you want an audience?...make it a charity event payable to your local trauma center...

...true...that goes for ANY motorized vehicle ie. semis, cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, etc., but stunting, street racing, and drifting have no use on the public roadways...we all speed often out of necessity ie. late for work, emergency, gotta take a dump, etc.....stunting and drifing and street racing are seen as bad things by tha vast majority of normal motorists...and sometimes we speed for fun and pay the price...

These guys were just asking for it...sure we all speeda dn break the law...but to do what they did between cars travelling at 1/3 or 1/4 of those speeds on snow covered roads? Sorry, that's just plain dumb. I'm not saying they got what they deserved, no one deserves to die (under these circumstances) but when you play with fire, you're gonna get burned. Too bad about the innocent's that got eradicated during that stupidity...that really sucks. They are trying to pass a law in Canada that will send you to jail for life if you're caught racing and you kill someone though. I'm in favor of that...

if you look close during the wipout scenes section, you'll see a girl try to stand on the back seat. According to the guy that filmed it, she was trying to stand up and put her arms all the way out, She broke both her wrists. Not quite as bad as the news pics but uhmmmmm

problem is that only has a _chance_ of doing any good if people know about that (that kinda law is easily forgotten until needed), plus i really don't know if it would help anyway. i mean, if some stunter (or whatever0 knew this particular run was gonna kill someone, they unquestionably wouldn't do it right? but they do cause when we do this kinda shit we bet that nothing will happen and usually we're right. besides, life for racing resulting in unintentional death fetches life, but 2nd degree murder will fetch on average what... 15 years (guess)? doesnt add up to me. if we go harsh on street racing, then other sectors have gotta toughen up too (which they should imho). then u get into the issue of the expense of keeping people incarcerated.

fuck, nothing is ever simple.
