Won't start

I Stopped at a MAC machine to get money today. I left the key on and fan run for a minute or so and when I pushed start it turned over for a split second and then started clicking. The temp. gauge was flashing from top to bottom and was making a noise too. I had the wife bring some tools out and I checked the fuses and battery connections. Everything was good. I noticed the voltage was at 11.0 v after a few false starts. It dropped to 9 then I had to go get my truck. Even after it cooled down it was clicking.
It is late and I figured I would ask the "experts" what they think it is before I take it to the scary dealership.I would rather fix it myself if possible. Maybe a bad battery?

Sounds like your battery shot craps. The low voltage reading on your Voltmeter is pretty much a dead give away. I

If the voltage is that low after only a few attempts to start, it sure sounds like a bad battery.

How hot was the ambient air temp when you stoppped, and was the engine temp high when you shut it off? I guess there's a *very* remote possibility that the engine seized, but that's unlikely...

Hopefully it's just a faulty battery and the dealer will swap it for a new replacement. The battery on my '02 ZZR1200 went bad after only 6 months. I don't remember what brand it was, but I had never heard of it. The replacement was a higher quality (according to the dealer) Yuasa. That new battery never gave me a bit of trouble in the next 4 years that I owned the bike - and that included many miles in HOT Texas weather.

That was definitely the first place I was going to look. I just did not have time to mess with it in the dark. Thanks

With the bike running, will the volt meter needle swing from say, 12v to 13 volts or more? If yes, then it's not the charging system? If the needle does not move (at all) on the meter (when you blip the throttle), then it is a charging problem, and your battery suffered for it?
If, on the other hand, it's the battery, and the system is charging like a bandit, then my guess would be a poor battery prep on the pre-delivery? Was the battery charged (correctly) before delivery, or did they wet the battery, throw it in the bike and hand you the keys?
The test on the battery, plus the voltage output on the bike's electrical system should pinpoint where the problem lies?...

Too bad. You qualify for warranty work either way.... good luck at the dealer?

Remember to walk the bike with the writer and document each scratch on the fairing parts. That's how you want the bike returned in said condition. If not, then that's new panel parts for you... out of dealer's pocket! Keep the bike (panels) together, then sign off the bike with the manager before work is started... that should keep them on their toes with your bike in their possession... hopefully?
