First time @ drag strip

I am installing my Brocks megaphone, pc3, and tre today. I am also going to be racing for the first time next Wed. night. A few a the guys in my group have stock busas and I really want to beat them. None of us have any real drag racing experience. I am looking for a couple of pointers. I was wondering about the launch and keeping the front tire on the ground. I do not have it lowered.

Thank you.

Get a strap and some lowering links unless you like to ride wheelies .... . Cost less than 80 bucks for both .....Don't worry about the busas , if they have never been to the track they will run no better than you...Just have fun......

First Time Eh??

Run 20-24 psi in rear tire.

Don't over do it!! Just drive away from the LAST YELLOW LIGHT just as if you were driving awat from the Green light on the street. Get throttle pined as soon as possible.....

Get tucked as SOON as you can and DON"T MISS A SHIFT!

Run All the way trough the traps to get good trap speeds.

Your Eye Abusa Boys will trying to catch up all night!!

36 psi in the rear will hook just fine on a stock wheel base zx14 .... 1.51 60 foot on mine with 36 psi ...
Everthing else you said to do is spot on ....

1. Get there early. Park the bike and observe.
2. Go to the start line and WATCH other racers to see exactly where they pull to, to light the pre-stage and the stage lights.
3. Assuming that it's a full tree, stand there and watch the yellows come down so you get a rhythm for when the last yellow comes on. As a spectator, mentally leave on the last yellow.
4. You might even want to walk the track before you run to find out where the finish line is so you don't let out too soon or stay in it too long.
5. Don't try to set a world record on the first run!
6. Look straight down the track and concentrate on staying in the groove. Pay NO attention to what's going on in the other lane.
6. What the others said!
7. Have fun!

run a few times by yourself. I got pretty friggin' frusterated because I was in a hurry to get lined up staged, and this and that. It takes a lot off your mind if you can concentrate on just launching. Don't even sweat the light until you've run a couple times. Practice a few nice easy runs, preferrably by yourself. Don't go out there and try killing yourself racing someone. Get the basics down, figure out exactly what RPM you need to launch to keep traction. It's all about the small things.

When do I put me feet back on the pegs?
What position in the seat feels best?
What RPM am I at when the back tire starts to spin?
Is my visor closed?

Leave the PSI in your tires alone. When you've run a few times, you'll have a better idea of what you need to do.

Small stuff makes a huge difference. Don't worry about the busa guys, have fun and learn something new EVERY time you roll down the strip. The more comfortable you are, the better off(safer) you will be. FYI, Don't get hung up watching the other guy....you can drift pretty far fairly quick if you're not paying attention to your game.

Here is my routine for staging (with my 12R):
.
1) I skip the burnout. No need at my track. They prep it fairly well.

2) As soon as I can stage, I pull forward and get the first light. I let the other hero melt his tire and heat the engine up, thus killing hp.

3) I wait for the other guy to fully stage (both lights), and bring his revs up. He is waiting for me to stage.

4). I casually flip down my visor and position my body. From the time he fully stages I have 20 seconds to get ready. Meanwhile he has his motor wailing.

5) Bring my revs up. I take out the slack in the chain with the clutch. Then I slowly inch forward under the power of my toes and a cunt hair of clutch.

6) Get the final staging light on my side.

7) Watch the lights drop and launch when I see the 3rd yellow.

8) Humiliate Busa rider.

Example:

Me Vs. Busa LE

Hope this helps! :-)

Did you miss the part about him being NEW to drag racing?

My advice - forget everything this guy just said!

Be courteous. Pre-stage. Let the other guy pre-stage. Then one of you can stage first. It doesn't matter what the guy in the other lane is doing as long as you concentrate on your own racing.

This technique is called "burning the other guy down." You won't make any friends doing this and you won't win any more races. Usually, the guy playing the head games has this work against him as often as not, because he is concentrating so much on messing with the other guy, he forgets to race.
As a new racer, there's enough to think about without trying to play these games.

Sorry man, but I got "burned down" right off the bat. I learned how to avoid that trap.12's run hot, and 10 seconds of staging will knock a tenth or so off your time in the 1/8th.

It's not the way I want to race...but it is the way it works.

I was just trying to spell out how to stage, get prepped, and do your thing...without feeling pressured by the other guy. Also, at most test nights you won't end up running your buds all the time anyway.

And, uhh, when it comes to real racing...you race within the rules. If everyone at the track isn't your buddy, so be it.

Also, when I use "my" technique, I don't give a flyin' shit about the other guy. I see his 2nd light, and I go through my automatic routine. That's it. The important thing for me is that I stay relaxed, not rushed.

My .02.

taking the chain slack up is a very good pointer , new or not.
you WILL launch more consistently this way no matter what rpm you leave at.

by this I mean driving all of the drivetrain lash out of the bike, while holding it back with your feet, the clutch will be right on the verge of engaugement, better traction this way, and better clutch feel, put both feet up asap, BOTH , for better balance, shift it just before the rev limiter, force as much weight as possible on to the handle bars and crouch close over the tank, with practice, you eventually should be rolling the throttle hard off the line, then asap holding the throttle wide open, using the clutch to control how hard it launches, and slipping it to limit wheelies.
