Coolant issue Went for a ride tonight for about 20 miles. Stopped the bike. Everything is ok. Drive home and noticed about 6 to 8 drops of coolant underneath engine, on the left(non throttle side). There was a wet area on the bottem edge of the lower black fairing. I know the overflow tube is there, but the bottle was at the proper level of coolant in the overflow bottle. Anyone ever had this? I checked the front of the radiator and didn't see any leaks, everything was down low. I even had a few drops in the "V" portion of the lower black fairings where they connect in front with the push pin, but it seemed to have come from the left side and flowed down to there.............Has anyone experienced this? My bike never got over 1 bar past half way............and ran half way 90% of the time. I saw no gushing of coolant at all...................

Check the hoses, make sure the hose clamps are tight.
I was surprised how loose they were, when I removed my rad to repair it .
The overflow hose is routed down near the gear shifter shaft and clutch slave cylinder.
Doubt you would get any coolant on the front portion of the lowers from the overflow.
I mean mine was pissing out the hole in the front of my rad (rock), and at speed, and hardly any ended up in the fairing!

not a lot of traffic, only got up to 120 or so, ran at the half way mark most of the time. I will check the hoses. Thanks...........!

did your coolant resevoir level drop?
Mine never dropped, the hole was big enough to draw air in, as the coolant system cooled,
If it has a leak which is large enough, the system will not have a vacuum on it, when it cools off, and the level in the resevoir will not change.
good catch though.... oil and coolant, tractions worst enemies, and sometimes catastrophic on for the rider and bike!

found the problem. The overflow tube that goes from the radiator to the overflow bottle had a hole melted in it from the Muzzy slider on the left side. Hole is about an 1/8 inch or a little smaller in size..................how is the easiest way to fix that, just buy new hose? This was my fault folkes, if I would have attached the hose out of the way, the way it was designed too, this would not have happened. Anyway no biggie........Thanks for the help!!!

Can you elaborate on that for me? Did you remove this hose at some point and re-install it differently, or did you have to move it to installe the Muzzy sliders?

I don't know what he did, but I do know that absolutely nothing needs to be moved to install the Muzzy frame sliders.

If you look at both overflow hoses there is a little device that holds them together. I failed to put the hose in the holder and it pushed up against the slider and the hole got burned into the hose.

It wasn't the slider install at all. Perhaps, when putting on the pipe, the hose wasn't seated in the holder properly and it came loose. With the addtion of the slider, the problem happened. Those sliders get hot............now I see why they want antiseize on these puppies............

Thanks for the info Vegasdude. I was one of the lucky ones that got the Muzzy sliders for 99 bucks. Like em. After reading this thread it appears I have one hose that is resting on the aluminum mount for the slider so I guess I'll need to correct the situation as a preventative.

Yes, inspect the hose if you have driven the bike. You will see the little holder, just put it back in. Glad this info helped someone!

I saw the little holder. Got to pull the fairing in order to get the hose positioned right. So far no burn through issues and I've been about 300 miles with the sliders installed. But I don't wanna take chances if I don't have to so I'll probably pull the fairings tonight. Actually have two clips on the hoses as well as a holder that is on the radiator overflow bottle. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

What kind of coolant would anyone here recommend for year round (would anyone use the Green (car coolant) or would anyone use the Orange (car coolant)?

You HAVE to insure that whatever coolant you use it is compatible with aluminum engines! I personally use a motorcycle manufacturers coolant. More expensive, but I feel safe using it. You can also use ENGINE ICE, which some claim provide improved cooling. I'm currently running the OEM Kawasaki coolant with Water Wetter. Water Wetter doesn't seem to do much for me. Before winter I'm replacing the cooling with Kawasaki or Honda brand.

I use Water wetter in Houston and it helps with a bar lower. I notice this when stopped in traffic not when driving on the road. I will need to swap it out this winter just because I change it every year. Will likely go with BMW because my K1200 is begging for it. There stuff exceeds anybodies standards. The color is blue for the BMW stuff.

I use distilled water with a bottle of watter wetter...runs way cooler than when I 1st got the bike...most of the time running at 1 bar below half on the highways...max 1 bar over half in traffic. Takes a lot to get the fan running too...
