Good Laugh at Bike Night Tonight

I arrived at the local coffee shop to see a crowd around a Harley. The guy had put a lot of money into it as it was supercharged and had Nitrous as well. The funny part was listening to him talk about how he had 'killed' most sport bikes in roll on's and runs up to 120 mph. Now he wasn't claiming he could out run a sport bike in top end.

He claimed he was putting out over 160 horsepower and about the same amount of torque at the rear wheel when the nitrous was engaged The motor was 120 cubic inches according to him. He was still running a belt drive, which leads me to believe he was pretty optimistic on his rear wheel horsepower figures. I don't think a belt would cope with those figures if it was in fact real.

Was this guy in 'dream land' or would that be possible on a properly set up Harley? It was not a V-Rod, but your basic air cooled Harley.

No opportunity to run him..................would of felt bad on my stock ZX considering he probably had more than double the money in his bike!

Well, you can bolt a jet engine on the back of a semi and make them pretty quick as well.................

Anything can be made 'fast' if you throw enough money at it!

I used to challenge people when I felt they were a little 'out there' on their claims! The guy obviously had put a lot of work into his bike and was proud of it. It's not worth my time to debate his claims- live and let live.

I would be curious to see what it goes like. It had stock Harley brakes (one disc up front) & suspension, higher handle bars and 'cruiser style' tires on it, so if it is even close to being as fast as claimed, it would be one scary ride!

That would be one scar;y ride, especially when you go to hit those front brakes hard and the front end slides on you.........

I will tell you this. I have a perticularly fast HD myself. It's pushing 135HP & get this 140TQ to the rear wheel. A nicely massaged 124" motor or 2.0L.I can drop the hammer on this bike a whole lot different than on the 14.
It won't beat the 14 to the 1/4. But, I wouldn't bet against it in the 1/8. I leaves VERY HARD & pulls to 140mph with relatively little ease. Just starts gettin alittle scary up there.(not set up for those speeds). Just my 2 sense! For the record, I left a ZRX1200 w/some mods. like christ left the Jews. And he wasn't catching me.

Be careful out there. You never know what the other guys' packin til it's too late!

I don't have a lot of experience with Harley's..........never owned one, only done a few demo rides. Is it possible to squeeze the front brake lever hard enough to lock up the front tire with a single disc set up? I found the brakes pretty wooden and lacking in power on any HD I have ridden. Certainly adequate for a stock machine with 65 horsepower though.

Buell makes an awesome single disc set up.................Harley should take some notes.............

Most Hardley's cost more than double our ZX's straight off the showroom floor... then add upgrades and you're talking about some very healthy money invested.

I came upon a vrod running a 50 shot...
Anything below 1/8 mile was very close and dependant on my traction.
Over 1/8 mile I pulled him hard.

He would have been making about 160 rwhp, and around 140 ft/lbs I'd imagine.

He always had the advantage in roll ons from low speeds, in ANY gear.

beware!!!

Good to hear your back in the saddle Mark!

More than 140LB TQ...HD Twins...make more TQ than HP at the rear wheel...but they also weigh 150 LBS more than your 14...at 600 dry VS your 450 dry....(pipes knocked off 30 lbs).

At any rate ... a v-rod makes around 120 RWHP stock, one with nitrous is one to be taken seriously, and make sure you have enough distance to catch him ... just in case LOL

FBA you need to change your signature now... zx14 mods are done yes?

Does the Triumph Rocket ever get dragged? It sounds intense, and the short ride I had seemed crazy, but I don't know if anyone has raced them. 147 ft lbs of torque at the rear seems pretty fuckin great.

For the money you spend to get a harley to really perform. You could make your 14 so fast you would be scared to ride it. I saw the turbo kits for the harleys. If i were to get one, a vrod with a turbo would be the shit.

As the saying goes... there is always something bigger, better and faster. At some point with a lot of money invested... a Harley will be able to out perform in a straight line a stock to mildly modified zx-14... however... we have the best of all worlds because we can go fast in a line... on a curve... ride long distance and not worry about the bike breaking down... or running out of gas or nitrous. I will leave the racing to the tracks... and drive away on my bike with a smile on my face knowing that I have a great all around bike... and that he is the one trying to prove that his bike is better... (or faster).. Hey I grew up a Harley guy... not my style... to each his own... been there doen that.. how many Harley guys can say that about the zx-14??

The owner of the local Harley shop here has a turbocharged V-rod that puts out 182 hp to the rear wheel. Pretty impressive.
