Clutchless up-shifting at speed.... good/bad?
I stumbed onto up-shifting without using the clutch by accidently kicking the shifter up while accelerating, it sure locked into the next gear fast. I now forget the clutch, burp the throttle between up shifts and with practice she ripps through gears really smooth. My question is ......is this ok for the tranny? The shifts feel really smooth and instant (most times) and I do use the clutch to downshift. Some of you 1/4 miler guys want to chime in and give some advice to a novice having too much fun ripping though gears?

If you do it right, which it sounds like you're doing., it's harmless. The bike will let you know if you screw up.

I only use the clutch for taking off from the light. After that all clutchless shifts even at WOT. Works just fine for me. Makes the tire squeek with every shift just like a car with a shift kit in the tranny.

I only ask because although it feels smooth on this bike my sons Kawa 600 doesnt feel right to him when he trys it so he stopped trying it. I can only imagine what a tranny costs to fix and worse yet I wouldnt have the bike to ride during repair.

Won't hurt it if you do it right, Biggest mistake people make is missing second gear at redline shifts and forcing it in anyway, just pull the clutch in and coast down if that happens.

roll of the power slightly, when lever is pre loaded, and you will never break the tranny.
OK, well, never say never.... my old man once told me...
... should never break the tranny!

It's funny how some bikes are more forgiving in the clutch department. My ZX-6 I'd shift without a clutch all the time, the VFR is not so forgiving.
I just want to give you a heads up in one area, 197 HP without a clutch WILL stretch the chain pre-maturely. I would not be the tech nerd if I did not mention this ;^).

ah yes, but clutch shifting with that much HP could blow up the basket, and your clutch just may never catch up!...... burnt up clutch!

The shifting without the clutch up through the gears is super smooth when done right. There is no jerk that feels like it would stretch the chain. I was just wondering how you 1/4 mile experts do it. My son wheelies his bike and I can see it bang the chain, I always tell him to check his chain.
