Land Speed Record ZX14 !!!! Mission Viejo, CA. July 17, 2006 - Falkner Livingston Racing set a new Land Speed Record at the historic El Mirage Dry Lake in Southern California on July 15th, 2006. The FL Team attended the event with their Cycle Barn Kawasaki ZX-14 with the goal of testing the motorcycle in preparation for Bonneville Speed Week in August 2006. Rider Paul Livingston set a new record on the 1.3 mile course with a top timed speed of 187.247mph for the 1650cc Production/Production class.
Livingston said "The stock Kawasaki ZX-14 motorcycle is very well suited for Land Speed Racing from its aero body down to its Bridgestone Battlax tires. After Race Tech tuned the suspension we added the DynoJet Power Commander and K&N filters and we were able to go straight to the track."
Team principal Rod Falkner said "Our goal for this event was to take the motorcycle through tech inspection and make a shake down run at the higher desert altitudes with a very stock tune. The strength and speed of the engine became apparent immediately, which we were pleased to see since S.C.T.A. rules require the 1352cc engine to run in the 1650cc class."
The Cycle Barn/Falkner Livingston team also used Dumonde Tech Racing Lubricants, Garmin GPS, NGK Sparkplugs, Pit Bull, Spider Grips, SportVue Head's Up Display, and Sprocket Specialist gearing during the speed run.
Falkner Livingston Racing would like to thank their sponsors: Bridgestone, Brosel Design, Carbon Spider, Catalyst Composites, Cycle Barn, Design 500, Dumonde Tech, DynoJet, Flow, Garmin, Greg's Customs, HGNR, Hyperpro, K&N, Micron, NGK, Nitrous Express, Power Commander, Pit Bull, Pole Position Raceway, Race Tech, Spider Grips, SportVue, Sprocket Specialists, Stomp, Tifosi Optics, Tiger Racing and Veypour.

I'm gonna jump right in and show my "land speed record" ignorance here...
How is 187.247 a record? Haven't other stock bikes ('busas, 12R's, etc) done speeds like 192, 194, 196... whatever, at officially timed venues? Also, how is this stock with an aftermarket air filter and a PC? Seems like a bone-stock '14 is already supposed to hit it's speed limiter at 186, right?
I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but what am I missing? Also, what was the previous record, and on what bike?

zermatt....Did you read the part about the ZX14 having to be entered in the 1650cc class?
Please RE-read the press release, AND understand that this was just a shake down run for Bonneville.
To many rules and regs. for me to try and explain all of what you are asking.......perhaps someone else could chime in.

Sir, Would you please cite your source? Maybe post a link? I'd like to read the details. No matter what I google in your article, it shows nothing. Even your date, title, and Livingston's quote. And Faulkner Racings web page news....nada, uhm..... its even a Suzuki team LoL

I personally can only believe that it was a record for that actual venue??!! Can you imagine what a 1650cc bike could do in the right conditions? Also it states that it is a 1.3 mile course. Maybe other people have bettered the top speed, but were not able to stop to tell about it??!!

I still don't get it......... Maxton standing mile a zx14 goes 196.1 and sets a new production record.... How does going 187 in 1.3 miles set a record? One would think the extra 3rd of a mile it would be faster? Just asking..... Smokin...

Saying it's a Land speed record is misleading. It is only a record for that venue in the 1650cc class. That's all. The Busa has better speeds but it is in the 1,300 cc class. Top speed record for a motorcle is approximately 333 mph. The only place a motorcyclist can achieve a World Record in the USA is to run his bike at the BUB speed trials which takes place starting Sep 3-7 at Bonneville. World Records are governed by the FIM in France. The 14 falls into the 1650 cc catagory.

I've driven on El Mirage dry lake, it's like an enormous flat dirt road. Not an ounce of tarmac to be seen, so traction is a problem getting up to speed in the required distance. Let alone stopping at the other end!!

It's a record for the dry lakes for the 1650 production class. That's on the DIRT. I ain't easy. The only thing harder is Bonneville.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I guess it's a venue thing. I couldn't imagine that 187mph was the fastest *anyone* has ever gone in a 1650cc class... just didn't make sense. The original article only says "set a new land speed record", which is just a tad misleading.
