Oil Filter

Doing my first oil change and I cant seem to get the original oil filter out. I have a imperial oil filter wrench that is made for this filter 65mm 14 flute. When I apply pressure to the wrench it slowly gives way and spins. Plus cant seem to get the bottom left panel off feels like it is stuck in the middle of the panel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Below is a post from page 3 or so... sometimes you have to look back a little. There are a few more. One of them explains the left lower removal. States that it is hinged... and tells the actual size of the wrenchs/sockets. I believe it is on page 5...

Easy Oil Filter Removal

Today was my first oil change. I've heard the horror stories about removing the factory
installed oil filter. I have one of the round "cap type" oil filter wrenches which is the right
size for the Kawasaki filter (and most other Jap bikes). Attempting to use it resulted in the
wrench "popping" off the end of the filter. Filter was on very tight and I couldn't get it to move.
Well, I worked at my dad's truck stop in Texas and whenever that happened we would just
wrap a shop rag around the filter and then push the wrench on. This gave a solid lock and
the wrench would no longer slip. Tried it on the Kawi filter. Worked great. Didn't take a lot
of effort on the wrench. Filter came right off. So if you have trouble, give this a try. Has worked for me on new cars and new motorcycles. Hopefully will work for you. Enjoy your 14. I'm loving this thing.

no need to take off any lower fairings. Oil filter and plug are completely exposed. I have done two oil changes without a drop touching a fairing.

You can also use the shop rag trick with a strap-style oil filter wrench. That's how I got my first filter off. I had to fold a red shop rag over 4x (quarters), then put it over the filter, then slide my smaller-sized strap-style oil filter wrench over the towel. When it tightens up, it provided enough grip to spin the filter without damaging it.

I have about 400 miles on my bike - so I will be doing my 1st oil change in a couple of weeks. I also picked up 3 kaw oil filters - I paid about 10.95 each - what have others been paying?

That sounds like a reasonable price. The dealers around here all want full retail - I think that's something like $12.95?

I used a Kawi filter for the first change, but then switched to the Pure One for my 2nd change, and that's what I'll be using in the future. $5.95 at Pep Boys.

The Pure One PL14612 is an exact swap for the OEM filter, and the Pure One PL14610 is slightly longer with more filter media and will also fit the '14 well since there's so much room down there.

Autozone's around me don't carry the Pure One filter, but Pep Boys does.

Thanks guys for all your help. Finally got the filter off using the shop rag method. Took a few
times but it finally came off. What a pain in the ass. I got the lower panel off too just wanted a little more room to get at the filter. I expect the next change to be alot easier. By the way the ZX 14 is so awesome after reading this web site for awhile I decided on the 14 over the
Busa. My riding buddy has a Busa so once the 14 is broke in we will test the two. My buddy
with the Busa road my 14 and said you made the right choice this thing is sweet. Thanks again.

Glad to hear that you got the filter off, that think can be a bitch! Your next oil change will be MUCH MUCH easier. This is the easiest bike to change the oil that I've ever had!

Oh, and this is a WAY better bike than a 'busa. You won't be leaving him behind by much on a top-end run, but you'll leave him in the twisties with the incredible handling and braking advantage you'll have on him!

Actually Matt, it's the reverse. The PL14610 is the longer (3 1/4") and the PL14612 is the shorter (2 1/2").

I run the PL14612 on both my zx-12r and the R1.

Oops... got them confused. We've been talking about these filters for so many weeks now, I've gotten the numbers backwards. I wish we could sticky a "the stock oil filter is too tight", and "use the Pure One PL14612 filter instead of Kawi's $13 POS" threads right up at the top for a few weeks.

Interesting, Maybe it's because I actually ride 7500 miles between oil changes but I was under the impression that the Kawasaki or Wix Oil Filters were best for motorcycles.

My parts guy sells me the oil filter for 6.50, and does his homework (spark-plugs for the R1 fit the 14). Great guy.

I doubt you'll ever find anyone willing to argue that a Wix isn't a good filter. I'd use them if they were readily available and convenient, but they aren't for me. The Kawi filters are really just another cheap oem filter, I don't feel like wasting my time with them since they cost $13 around here and nobody discounts. $6 for a top-rated Pure One seems like the way to go.

Thanks... I called Auto Zone again and the reason that they couldn't cross referance it (he now tells me) is because they do not carry them. I will have to see which one they do carry. I was always figuring that you couldn't go wrong with the factory filter. I don't mind spending the money.... but I think it was Blitz that posted the link to the filter info... that was really good. We don't have a pep boys around here.. I think in Milwaukee, 32 miles... I will have to figure it out. Thanks again!

This past Sunday I had to take a screw driver and pry off the oil filter - this was the 2nd filter.
A total mess and some cussing but I got it - put the replacement on hand tight.
Should be a piece of cake from now on. I had to vent, i feel better now.

3Boysand3Bikes - do you have "Advanced Auto Parts"? They carry the PureOne's here.

BTW, even the 612 part isn't a perfect fit on my bike. The Brock pipe has to be slightly pried to starboard to get it to start. There's about 1/4" clearance when it's installed.

so, I decided to pick up one of the Pure One filters...

First stop - wally world - no go
Second stop - Schucks - no go
Third stop - Advance AutoParts - no go
Fourth stop - Kragen Auto Parts - no go.

So on the way home, stopped at Fred Meyers to pick up a half gal of milk...Decided to take a look...

Score!

Fuck, the Fred Meyer's is only two miles from my house...I musta put on 30 miles driving around. Doh...
