THANX MARK ( ZX-14 9/10'S RUNS)
last week i went out and got a couple 9/10s runs on the 14. it has been about 5 years since i ran the 9/10s. it was time i went bak out. i ran 178 gps both runs. i was slow, but at least i was consistent. the skoot was difficult to launch ,the power nuetering kawi has done makes the engine respond kind of like a piston-port two stroke...not much at first, then all hell breaks loose.
went back out this week with my freind/mechanic Mark. i did 2 runs,my best being 179. i was not happy. i was also experiencing a physical
problem i had 5 years ago. after the first run i will start to feel what i think is a pinched nerve, with a 'shock' felt in my neck, and numbness running down into my arms/hands/fingers.man,i really wanted to get bak into this stuff. after the second run it just gets worse.
during a run i felt as though i was getting way too much wind blast,so i asked mark to run the skoot. i just was not comfortable with the way i was feelin, and i just could not get comfy on the skoot.
MAN,his first run, after only ridden the bike around my shop area for
maybe 8 minutes showed 182,shutting off early as he ran up on a vehicle.
it has also been about 7 years since Mark ran the 9/10s. so the smiles were on our faces. we discussed/compared our launch and run technuiques, and it surely sounded like he was runnin it in a much smarter manner. sent him back out for a 2nd run,and by golly he pulled 184. ding dang,we're makin progress. in retrospect he felt he could make some
further changes to his style,so out he went for a 3rd pass. this was the one that had us both smilin...with the changes he felt he needed to make, he was able to hit the speed-limiter...at the 8/10's point, pulling 184 again,a full 1/10 mile b4 his last run. lookin at my 6th gear dyno runs shows the speed limiter hitting at .....185 !! this is done with the skoot actually sitting higher than stock as the bike has been raised to have the proper sag with my fat butt on it.
so,with him,my new "jockey", we made some gains today that were not
possible with me on the skoot. heck,as i am typing this my finger tips are
still numb! i guess i'll just focus on the corner-carving,as this 14 absolutely rails, the chicken strips were gone at the 500 mile point!
more to come.

9/10 racing is just what it says .... take 1/10 to get up some speed like 40 to 60 mph and run 9/10s of a mile wide open and read you GPS at the end ....I really don't care for it, it not a geat way to get numbers and GPS can be off .... Better to run a mile from a dead stop at Maxton or the TX mile to get real numbers with real timers ....South FL is about the only place they do 9/10 racing and means nothing in the real world of top speed racing...I'm sure it's fun but proves nothing ..

smokin, fyi
9/10's racing started about 20 years ago. your descrptiion of 9/10's is wrong, and even though i am not it's biggest fan, your response is very inaccurate . it is done from a rolling start, usually about 5-10 mph. there is no40-60 mph headstart as u state, and even though it is not a sanctioned type event,it has evolved into a way to document and help legitimize performance levels of different skoots, and modifications done to them. using a gps has shown to be consistent with very good repeatability.
as my life has progressed thru the years,i moved away from the 9/10's stuff and elevated my skills in the corner-carving area. the 9/10 is fun and i always missed it,so with this new 14 i't'll be bak out there.
for anyone to trash a type of racing or m/c activity, especially with the naive, and even ignorant comments as made above,is really ,well just plain close-minded. back in 1987-1988, i set 13 national records over 4 classes, finishing national #4 in competition
eliminator in my first year of competition. all on a completely self built kz1000..i did the cylinder sleeving/boring,the head work with BIG friggin valves, undercut the tranny and converted it into a auto 1-2 shift, in otherwords every friigin aspect. i look at your signature and see u have taken a factory bike that YOU are not responsible for the power level, slammed it ,and what ,you are now an expert? i will have ,come this september, 30,THATS THIRTY friggin years in the m/c biz. i have forgotten more than u will ever know about bikes, and have done more with them than u will ever do,and hopefully never have the condescending, ignorant attitude you display.
i have always felt that the differences in bikes, bike activities, types of racing are not the causes of the separations in our sport. it is the ignorant attitudes of people like u.
if u r gonna flout your opinion or describe something,u better friggin know what u r talking about.

Wow .
That got right out of hand.
First off , .....Sorry......
No personal insults were intended, although i can see how it may have been taken that way.
I do not come here to berate anyone, unless they deliver it first.
OK?
Secondly, I have been misinformed.
I've been riding for 28 years myself, and simply stated that an entire mile is not necessary to reach top speed on the 14.
And as pretty as Harley's are, stock.... they are slow.
That said, I feel that you are right, the sport has been divided by ignorance.
and.... I too feel it is too bad.
Anyone who knows me personally, will tell you... I like people, peace, and love motorcycles!
I still do not understand why one would not use distance to top speed, as an indicator for performance, even from a rolling start to eliminate traction issues.
?????????
I can assure you I can handle the power of my bike just fine, and choose the most responsable place available to "run" it.
You do not know me, my abilities, or knowledge.
My environment has not allowed me to participate in events as you have.......
That does not mean I do not have the talent, or experience!
therfor I find your response ironic, when calling me condescending.
You are the one who took it, and made it .......personal.
Brother, I did not intend to slam you.
A little too defensive maybe.....
Thats Ok .
Have a nice day

not a chance dude,u guys really have no concept of distance...sure u'll acclerate better with a pipe, but u need to lay off the pipe and come down to reality. my runs were on a stok skoot, stok gearing,NOT lowered. these are baseline runs, and will get better as time goes on. this post was for information only, for those who might find it interesting to follow someone's progress with their skoot. not showin off or flouting my ego, nor was i expecting this level of idiocy. u don't have to believe me,and if it's that important that u guys trash this subject or try to make urselves out to be faster/better/quicker,then u probably are.

Racnray Man you got your undies in a wad real quick over nothing... 9/10 racing is nothing but fun and chest pumping, it means nothing in the real world of racing ... It's done on the street and is not safe or hold any Nat records....But i'll say it again it's fun and fun to run your buddies.....
Now as for calling me stupid ..I'm 50 years old and have been racing NHRA,AHRA, NMCA and NSS/AA for 33 years.. I have 9 Nat records and 25 Nat class wins as well as being Number one in points bracket racing in 3 states ... I'm well know engine builder and tunner here in FL....So sonny watch who you call stupid , they may call you out on that..
Now i have never called you stupid nor will i and i will not use bad words to get my point across.
I have seen pleanty of 9/10 racing and everyone has there on take on how the start ..Most i have seen want to start at 40 to 60 to keep from spinning or wheeling .. Yes some do start at lower speeds ...But it's kind of up to the riders because there are NO real rules...Look it's just for fun and bragging rights and nothing more... GPS was be proven to be off by as much as 3 to 5 MPH .. If you think i'm wrong ask anyone how has run a Maxton mile or TX Mile ...This has been tested more than once.....
Have a nice day really...... Smokin....

One more thing ... Yes my bike is stock motored ...Do you mind if i test it and learn to ride it before i start the tunning ?? If you know anything about bikes and you say you do then you know you get your skill up to par with the bike before you start adding power... If you took the time to read my posts you would see i put a bunch of runs stone stock and added power adders one at a time ...It's called testing and tunning ... My other street/race bike only makes 150 hp and weights in at the same as the zx14 does.... With a stock motor and lots of testing and tunning has run 9.52@139 with a 1.41 60 foot times..Not bad for a bike that claims factory times of 10.70s with a pro rider.. Anyway i didn't mean to make you mad it's just my view on that type of racing ...Sorry i pissed in your oatmeal... Your test at the 9/10 is a good read but if you look at what happened at Maxton(standing start mile) a short time ago you will see that a stock zx14 with 24 miles on the clock set a new stock record at 196.1....

I thought Maxton measured your average speed through a set of traps, like in a drag race. Whereas the GPS records the actual top speed you attained.

Yes there are two set of traps at Maxton...Not sure how far apart they are , the Maxton web site does answer that question ....My understanding is it is better way to read a total top speed than GPS ....GPS signal depending on locations can be off ...Point is you win no prize or set any record with a GPS... If GPS was the best way then the salt flats, maxton or TX mile would use them...?This may help>> http://www.ecta-lsr.com/faq.htm#q09

If the traps measure your average speed, then it's not total "top" speed, like a GPS would record. So saying they're off using something like Maxton as a comparison is flawed.
I'm not making an argument for which is better, but using one to compare to the other doesn't quite work.

Pretty good. I got the job with the Border Patrol, went to the academy, and I live in Green Valley, Arizona just south of Tucson. My station is down in Nogales. Not much time for riding, bike is down, no time to fix it yet. Hopefully soon, lots of good roads to ride, and a pretty decent 1/4 mile nearby. The elevation kinda sucks though, lol.

Well masterbater, if you read my entire post you would have read this too:
........................................................................................................
"Ok I better verify the distance tonight... for sure somene will call me out on it!
but for sure 0 to limiter to zero within a mile !
No Problem! "
.........................................................................................................
I did in fact measure the distance, and completely STOCK my bike ran:
zero to 186 to zero in 4550 ft.
With Brocks Smeg and map on the pc 3, rear suspension lowered 2 inches and front 1.25 inches my bike ran :
zero to 186 to zero in 3960 ft.
SOOO , MASTERBATER : you can put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Racinray,
I will not apologize again, I already have, only to be called an idiot ?
Anyway
I can appreciate that it would have taken alot of work, and some big balls to push the envelope, with a KZ1000 back in the day.
Guys like yourself were the grassroots pioneers of performance cycling!...... and the fact you did your own wrenching makes it even cooler.
I prefer to work on my own machines as well !
We are just spoiled with the levels of performance available nowadays !
Its a fine machine it is!
Enjoy the ride everybody, and ride safe!

Wow, you guys are the best! You must be the sole owners and riders of the most extreme and fastest 14's on the planet. Your riding skills and experience you post are appalling! I bow in homage. Only thing that can match you guys is a cat launch off a carrier in a FA 18!!
BTW, I ride the "other bike", modestly built by a good buddy, a modest 183 BHP and 110 FT Pounds Torque on an HONEST Dyno, but heck you guys would just blow me away with your amazing 14"s.
I bow in homage, no disrespect, just responding accordingly.
Cheers, and hope you all set more land speed records, I will be checking the papers...

Congrats, ...Your bike probably accelerates as well as a zx14 then!
But the brake portion would blow right by 3960 foot mark.
