No Confidence In The Stock 14 Tires
I know every rider has his own tire preference. I am just saying I was
hitting some twisty's on a few occasions lets say medium to hard
riding and they have slipped on me pretty bad. I am slapping a set
of Dunlop 209 race tires on. I think they will do the trick. They only come
in a 50mm and not the stock 60mm. I don't think it will effect the bikes
handling. I will see on thursday after I scrub those mothers up..........

Vak ...............bud some info
180/60/17 =
180mm tire section width
60 would be percentage of width and represents dimension of the sidewall
example 60% of 180 equals 108 mm thats the side wall height from rim to pavement
17 is rim size in inches

Its all about smooth throttle control. Try riding a 230+ hp bike at 700+ lbs total weight with crappy fuel injection running along side a pair of 06 gsxrs and a built zx10r thru some seriously tight twsisting roads at 80-90 mph. At any time you could get ham fisted and over power the tires and highside the bike in a blink of an eye.
Its all about being smooth on the throttle. Even with race tires you can overpower the tires with a zx14. Shit, this little 10r can over power the tires at will.
When all there was was the cbr900rr with 120hp you could get away with a lot of ham fisted throttle control, but these bikes now are over powering the tires.

OK OK lol yes that is what I meant the side wall size. So you learn
something new everyday........................I road on a pair on a GSXR 1000
and I would give the stock tires a 4 and the Dunlop 209's a 9 so thats
what I am going with.........................

I hate the stock tires as well ,I prefer pilot powers. Can't wait till the stockers are toast.

Throw on a 190/50-17 Michelin Pilot power on the rear & a 120/70-17 on the front they are the best tires out there. I've got a set of Dunlop Qualifers on my 636 & the PP's on my 10. Wish I had the PP's on the 636 too. I made sure to get all the #'s right lol

+ 1 on the Pilot Powers. They are awesome tires, wore them on my 'Bird, never had an issue, and for sticky tires they seem to have good durability.

you really can't compare tires on different bikes, especially not such different bikes. you wouldn't buy a set of tires you liked on an F1 car to put on your minivan would you? how would you know anyway? that's not to say you wouldnt actually be happier with the 209s, just that you describe an invalid comparison. honestly tho, i very seriously doubt the tires are actually letting you down. there's plenty of people out there who i woudl imagine are much faster riders than you (or me, or most people) that have not gone past the tire's capability.

Ask yourself this:
Are the 209s really built for the weight of bike and rider that you are talking about?
That might bear investigating. Dunlop will be more than happy to talk about their tire recommendations if you email them.

I went for a 200 mile ride the other day to complete the running in before the bike's first service. The second hundred miles was almost all twisties. All I can say is that my confidence in the stock rubber improved mile by mile. I got to the edge of the tyres and was having to be careful not to grind the footrests away.
Maybe on a track they would begin to slide after a lap or two but for road riding? no probs.

I love my Battlax. I think they are awesome.
And lots better than the rubber I used to race on.
Tires have really improved in the last 10 years, haven't they? They even wear longer.
I'm happy.
Plus, on a 1500-3000+ mile trip I don't want race tires. Bad wear, flats, etc...

Sounds like medium to hard riding to you is really hard to extreme maybe?
Unless like Y2K says you are not smoothe enough. Possible?
Even practicing starts when my 14 was new/stock I had to be smoother than my 12 because there is alot more power. And my 12 had a pipe.

Big bikes like the Busa and the 14 do quite well with the Michelin Pilot Sport or Pilot Power's. I prefer the Sport...and they last way longer than the current supplied OE tires, all that and they stick like glue. Power's will last even longer...

I'm not saying that he isnt a good rider or isnt smooth on the throttle, but just that its easy for these bikes to overpower the tires and being smooth helps a lot.. But obviously there is a limit to the traction available with any tire.
Vak, It does sound like you ride more agressive than most people including myself so you may need a race tire on the street. It sounds like you would be able to keep the race tire hot enough on the street. If you see blue colors "oils" coming out of the tire after a hard ride then you would be able to keep a race tire hot on the street. Most people dont ride near hard enough to use a race tire on the street, including myself.
Sence I ride this 1375 on the street and its still stock wheelbase etc. Its very easy to overpower the rear tire in a corner exit or even just going straight. This thing lifts the front as the rear spins coming out of a corner. Its really better suited for dragracing but its fun on the street.
We should hook up for a ride. I'm near Danbury.

I rode palamar mnt. alot on the stock BT014's and they stuck like glue. On one run I melted the edge of the tread to where it folded over and re-glued itself to the tire on hard acceleration out of the turns. (trying to keep up with my son on his 600) I was very convident in those tires, have scraped peg stops with no slipage. Maybe because I'm a bigger rider (more wieght) theres more force pushing down. I already had to replace the tires because of a rear blow out, got a pencil size hole in center of tread on freeway with other son on back. Tire went flat instantly. Rim was bent in 3 places from running over reflecters trying to get to side. $200 and 2 weeks to straighten. Just happy to not have gone down. Running Metzler M3's now. Haven't run twisties yet but seem ok on other mnt. roads. Metzler makes a P-spec M1 tire for the busa supposed to have heavier carcuss for heavier more powerful sportbikes. I found out about these after I already bought the M3's. You guys know anything about P-spec ratings on tires?

See now that is what I am looking for without even asking. If someone who knows
more about the tire deal then me which is very likely would like to tell me that I
should'nt make this move then let me know before I mount the f*#king things.
Any info or input is appreciated..................

I see allot of you like these pilot powers I have never had a chance to try those.
The 209's I mentioned I can get as a favor for $200 mounted and balanced. This
is one of the reasons I figured I would just grab them. Oh and the guy about the
roids as he put it lol. Yeah i have tried them whem I was a little younger big deal.
They give you about a 10% increase and thats it so relax and stop looking at guys
pics on the net lmao. Anyway Im not into the computer tough guy thing. Just have
my 14 in mind when I pop on here.

vak.. I rode the 14 on the track at LVMS .. had it at 165mph and the tires didnt slip or let go... other testers went even faster.. no one crashed and the tires performed well.
