kawasaki is aware of engine overheating!!
While looking through my owners manual I noticed on page 77 in the top right corner it states "Do not let the engine idle longer than 5 minutes , or engine overheating and damage may occur". Since when would a liquid cooled vehicle overheat by simply idling. I have owned several bikes over the years and never once has a manufacturer put a disclaimer as such in there owners manual. It makes you wonder if Kawasaki was aware of the problem and is just trying to cover there but in case people try to build a class action law suit against them due to catastrophic failure caused from it overheating. What do you do when your in a traffic jam sit there and watch your clock. Give me a break this sounds like a whole lot of BS if you ask me.

If your in a traffic jam shut the bike off. My busa used to heat up the same way, just comes from the performance I guess. We used to ride busa's in parades untill we were stranded because they overheated and we were moving the whole time just slow.

I remember when I had my 04' Gl1800 gold wing and there was a recall for an overheating issue. Honda siad it was a faulty gage reading and changed a reisistor or something like that. The needle never went past half on the gauge after that.

I too have the heat problem. My fan only comes on when I turn the key on. So either I can't hear it or it doesn't come at all when the bike is running. I live in Arizona so it's always hot here and have to commute 70 miles round trip 5 days/week. Buddy at dealer said to bring in or just make sure it doesn't boil out of radiator. I know the bike is a hot one to begin with and it's hot here but if you have any help for this let me know.

It's funny I like the engine heat but then again I'm in Iowa and it's 46 degrees today so far so the heat is nice for my 20 mile ride to work.

Guys trust me I am you HOT Weather guinea pig. It's been over 100F deg. for weeks now. I have been caught in down town traffic for up to 1/2 hour @ 107F stop and go ( It way sucks) The bike will go up to the last bar before HHHHOT and stay, no spit no sputter. I agree with the Tool Man, you are all worrying over nothing, the gauge is tricking you into thinking it's over heating. Again, has anyone actually had any coolant boil over yet? I rest my case.

overheating
This bike definately runs hotter more quickly than my ZX-12 did. I have helped the problem somewhat by reducing the glycol mixture to 25% from the dealer installed 50% and putting water wetter in the mixture. My next step is to install a manual fan switch like I did on the ZX-12.

swainic raises a good point... when you say it get's hotter are you taling about a numerical value like a ZX-10R display, or an undetermined heat value represented by nebulous bars?

I've been riding since 1968, and have always understood that you don't want to just let your bike sit and idle....With my 1361, I have to be even more careful, even with a manual fan switch.

The 12r owners handbook says the same do not idle for more than 5 minutes. Whos idling? its supposed to be ridden!! Traffic jams are no excuse all i can say is FILTER, and with the 14 you should be able to filter FASTER!!!!

Most all owner's manuals say that, I'm sure. I know all the ones (Most all, anyway.) I've read have.

How come you can sit in your car at the longest light with the A/C on and your temp gauge won't even move?
Even liquid cooled bikes are still dependent on air cooling-moving through the air.
Why do you think that there is not an actual temperature readout on a lot of bikes? They don't want you going back to the dealer with 'overheating' problems.
I think the fan on my 04 R1 doesn't even come on until 220F?

If my car made the same hp per liter as the ZX14 it would make 828hp. I think you might have to watch it in a car like that. I've got 1200 miles on my ZX14 and have been caught in two traffic jams and no problem, except a little sweat under the helmet which cleared up when I got movin.

About the only bike's I had that didn't have heat issues were the Busa's. They were always stable in traffic or while moving...BTW, most bikes will overheat if stuck in traffic for a long period of time (not 5 minutes)...as will most riders...:P
Kawa is just protecting their ass when they say 5 minutes...doubt that you would ever see a 14 overheat in 5 minutes while idling, unless it was 150 degrees + outside...

I'm wondering what coolant temps you guys think is hot....Because you guys should take alook at the CBR1000 message boards..Those bikes run REAL hot...Lot's of owners complaining of 230 and 240 plus degree coolant temps in heavy traffic...220 or 225 is perfectly normal for most bikes in heavy trafic on a hot day.

Have any of you guys tried Engine Ice yet? In 6 years of Myrtle Beach strip traffic it has never let my 12r overheat! not once! I think its well worth a try for any big-bore bike!

Why install a manual fan switch.. Just wire a jumper and extra fan on the other side so the fans will all come on at the same time.

Extra bit of safety for the guys that are nuts about the heat. Turn the fans on when you want...before it get's hot. Otherwise you can sit in traffic with your stock controlled fans, and wait for it to get hot as hell before the fans kick on. And if you wire it with a 3 position switch, you can set it to off/on and stock. Turn them on early or let the computer control it, or turn them off completely for drag race purposes. It's a no brainer.

Bike has been mine for 2 days now. 100 miles the first day. 200 today. So far no heat problem at all. Got stuck in stationary traffic for 10 minutes and the temp gauge never went past the 4th mark. Cruising above 30 mph in would run on the 3rd mark. Any slower and it would go to the 4th mark. Outside temp was in the mid-70's. Fan would run if the gauge hit the 4th mark. So far I have no worries about overheating.
