The true price of modifications

i know that some of the guys (and gals) here do the wrenching themselves.
i'm wondering if we could start a thread where folks could talk about the EXACT MODIFICATIONS they did and
1. the cost of the parts
2. the cost of the labor, if applicable
3. how long the install would take

i think a lot of folks get ripped off modifying their bikes.... especially the 14

thanks in advance.... this info would really be helpful

It depends on what you mean by "ripped off". If you have a mechanic that pays attention to detail and does his work perfect................what is that worth to you? It's worth a lot to me. Even though my mechanic is a personal friend and a great guy, I still pay him top dollar to mod my bike. Why? Because he is he very diverse in knowledge and he cares....................................! Friendship is one thing, modding bikes is another. He has modded my bikes since 1998 and is still a great friend. He tries to do stuff for free, but I won't have that. He is worth every penny I pay and I will not take advantage of the friendship...........I paid him 300 to put my pipe and power commander on and also to put power to a radar detector. He did it on a Saturday morning when I was off. I took my bike over the night before and he gave me a loaner. 300 bucks is a great deal for me and a great deal for him. We are both happy............

Vegasdude...
Now see thats a special situation, or relationship.
Now.....I can totally understand why you have him do it.
1) price is very reasonable
2) His hours, and flexibility are top notch
3) you know him personally, and he cares about his work.
bonus) loaner bike!

Its literally impossible to get any of that out of a service department these days!
You are a lucky one!

LOL
i shouldn't have used the word rip off
i am happy for your friendship
for the record, i also own a 2002 BMW K1200LT and 2005 BMW R1200GS
i know all about trusting people and spending more money than most to modify a bike

but,
maybe you can help me understand what i OUGHT to be paying for certain mods
parts and labor.... if you have the time and inclination
i do appreciate your time

Vegas-

Keep him.

There are times that I actually WANT to pay for some custom type work, but I end up having to do it myself. Once the bike goes to the back of my garage, it ain't coming out for a while. Even a couple hour job takes my lazy ass way too long to actually finish it.

well for a pipe you should be paying around a grand. The Power commander about 300-350. For labor anywhere from 65 to 75 bucks per hour, for a great mechanic. I'm lucky, my friend has top of line tire changer/balancer, every tool you can imagine and then he has much more than that. All types of connectors and little stuff that you always need in an install but never seem to have. And most of all he has patience. He has ungodly patience. He never forces anything. He works in a clean environment. I'm a pretty lucky person!!
