Grrr Kawi screwed the pooch on this tank...

So I'm packing and getting ready for my trip and I go out to test fit my travel tank bag on the bike. No go. Only 4 of the 7 magnets are on metal and this bag doesn't allow for straps. Tried my local tank bag (Joe Rocket Manta) and though it SEEMS like it's on there, I don't want to trust a couple grand worth of cameras, GPS, and cell phones to it. Why the hell did they make the fucking tank plastic on the front? ARRRGGHHH. Now I have no way of carrying my road essentials or powering my devices. Looks like I'll be running the XX to Americade instead. Bleh.

Try putting metal sheets under the plastic cover up front to give the magnets something to try to stick to, might work.

I went down to the local Auto parts store and picked up a bunch of thin rare earth magnets and taped (temporary, plan yo get new tank bag) them to the underside of the tank cover on my 12R. You might try the same, may require some trial and error with the false cover off.

I have a tailbag but I use the tank bag for maps, phone, wallet, keys, etc. I saw something that mounts on the gas cap. I might have to order something like that later on. I've been looking at the weather too and I might not be going if that weather pattern doesn't look like it's going to let up.

I got a Chase Harper/Adrian Design, recommended by Chase Harper specifically for my 14, for less than 100.00us. Magnetic, w/front and rear strap.
I only use the front strap. The Magnets grip well. No movement. Fits the weird contour of my tank perfectly for my needs, laying on it all day.
It works better than any of my old bags, especially for gas stops.
The factory staff was completely up to date on the 14 and knew exactly what to recommend.
Very professional, and they happily accommodated my needs for quick shipping.

One of the dudes (rxflyer) at 12R.org DG '06 had one of these. Had his R1 and K1200GT set up to use it. I've been meaning to order one for our RT. I'm going to ask if they can send another bracket with no holes so I can fit it to the 14.

Also, I was happy with a Tank Locker on the 12.

Thanks tslewisz. That Tank locker is looking trick...plus I can get the Cam locker to mount my digi video camera for some ride video...very nice. Think I'm about to start heating up the credit card again LOL! The Tank Locker already has a fittiment for the ZX-14 listed on their page.

I'll take a look at that Chase Harper bag too, but I like what I saw on the tank locker page. Anyone else have any experience with that make? Quality of kit?

Lots of guys on zx-12R.org are fans of the Tank Locker. I'm going to try the Big Mak just because of easier fueling access.

That one looked trick too, but I think it may look a bit like ass without the bag on, whereas the Tank Locker only leaves the ring, and I can live with that.

Agreed. It's a better solution for our RT and I'll only put it on the 14 for trips. I did order today, BTW.

With the Locker, you can put a beer can in the ring and pretend you're a Harley rider!!!!

I have the Tank Locker and I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't hold a ton but it holds the wife's and my workout apparel, her shoes and our assorted drinks when we go to the gym. Getting gas takes 30 more seconds than stock but I like the way it doesn't touch the pretty red paint. With that and the Heli Modified risers, I'm pretty darn happy. Now if Muzzy would get some Titanium in, I could be REALLY happy!

Cool...a 14 user that has the tank locker. How secure is it? I mean...will it hold fine when I hit pull the lever and jump to ludicrous speed? Is it truly locked on or is that promotional? How easy does the bag go on and off?

It is VERY secure and provided you didn't put lead in it, your jump to FTL would be quite safe. The ring is bolted down using 3 screws holding the gas cap, another ring and base plate are attached and truly locked to the bike. The base plate needs to be removed for fueling but otherwise I leave the base plate on the bike and simply unzip the bag from the plate. The bag comes off in less than 10 seconds and the plate/bag comes off in about 15 seconds. It takes longer to re-zip the bag in place but still not more than 20 seconds with practice. The plate simply drops on and with a 1/8 turn, and a push of a button, locks to the bike.

I've got bikes that have all metal tanks, bikes with full plastic / plastic covers, also bikes with the plastic front airbox covers.

For the 1/2's, I can turn a mag tank bag backwards and they hold perfectly.

For the plastics, I sewed-superglued 3 plastic buckles from the hardware store to the mag base and used their straps, found in the bungee cord section, to make my own strap-on (He said "strap-on")

I only need to feed the front strap when I want to use the bag. The rear strap gets folded under the seat or I velcroed the strap to my tank bra-lucky it is blue and I found blue strap / buckles.

Won't the bag from your 12 work?
