Tire life?

Who has the most miles on their ZX-14 so far, and how has the tire wear been? I have 2100 miles on mine now and I'm leaving tomorrow evening for a 2000 mile weekend. Will the tires last that long? I haven't been abusing the throttle on take off, doing burnouts, or anything else other than giving her a healthy twist at higher speeds for the fun of it. Think I can get another 2K out of these tires or will I be riding back on cords?

I'm at 2400 miles now, tire will last another 400-500 miles till toasted. I am hard on the throttle, but don't do burnouts.

Do you consider you have used half the tyre yet? What is the tread depth? Surely u can answer your own question it is just simple mathematics?!?

Obviously, you've looked at your tire and it's in good shape, as of now. Sounds like we ride pretty much the same. I hit it hard in short bursts when I'm in the mood. Otherwise, I pretty much aggressive sport-tour. I'm generally smooth on the throttle and hold momentum through the curves. In any event, I had no problem getting 6'ish grand out of my 'Busa rear tire, even though everybody told me I'd be changing them every thousand miles, or two. If they're good now, I think you're good to go.

2500miles. Road trip to W Texas with 80mph speed limit.
I observed factory break in mostly.
A few 175mph blasts.
Practiced a dozen drag race starts.
2000 miles left on my rear..
Tire life on my 12 was 1-6k depending on wrist action. This looks to be equal.

I'm at 2300, tire is shot down to the wear markers( No burnouts) Pilot Powers on the way.
If you take it easy you should make 2000 more on a trip. It's up to you and your right wrist
PS take tire money

I'm at 2300 and I've got *maybe* 1/32 before I'm on the wear bars. There's no way I'd get another 2000 out of it. I've been on several 250-mile "Sunday" rides with a few close-to-top-speed runs on each ride, and pretty hard riding in-between. Also commuted to work about 15-20 times (45mi round trip), and one 600mi ride to Austin and back last weekend. Pretty typical stuff for me really.

I've been getting 3,500-4,500 miles out of Pilot Powers on my ZZR, so I'll be switching back to those when this 014 gives up.

I've got a lot more than 1/32 left. I don't have a gauge to measure the tread depth, but I'm sure I've got 1/4 inch of tread depth left. I'm taking tire money just in case LOL. I was just wonder what some folks were getting for mileage. I had folks that only got 5 or 6K out of Avon 46 tires for the rear and I got nearly 10K out of a set of those on my XX. We'll see how it goes I guess. I'll probably be replacing these BT014s with Avon Azaros once they are done.

Yes I've looked at it, and it looks pretty good, but it's still showing far more obvious wear than my Avons did on my XX and I abused those tires. Hard launches, power wheelies, and all kinds of general hooliganism. I just didn't think they'd be looking this obviously worn.

square - I'm really not trying to be a butt here, but 1/4" of tread means that your tire is new... have you racked up most of your miles on a rearstand?

OK this will just make me look like a puss but what the hell. The point is to show it 6,000 miles can be achieved.
Here is my tire.

Here is my odometer.

And yes I fully expect this tire will see 10-12,000 miles.

So what tire should be put on the 14 when it's time. I like the look of a wider tire but that doesn't always mean a plus in performance, it's just a look.

LOL ok so I don't have an exact measurement, but it's more than 1/32 that's for sure.

Great mileage out of the tire, Rob! I've never even approached 6,000 miles on a tire... my right wrist prevents extended tire life...

On my Busa's, I never got more than 1800 miles on a rear tire. I always had a spare or two laying around the garage. I predict the 14 will be about the same. The lack of low end torque may help though. I always was a little anal about the tires-----did not feel comfortable on low tread depth. I am going to replace with oem.

Here is a good standard. Take a penny and place it inside the tread. if you can see all of Lincolns head, that is less than .093 / 3/32 / 2mm aprox. replace the tire. It is the only thing keeping your skin and the road separate!!

Thanks Matt, the kept man that I am well...If I tell the wife I need a new tire after a month of ownership. I'm thinking she would make me give up the bike. Lets see 250 a month for tires, kinda expensive for the schmuck who earns 1500 a month with a PT job. I'm a full time dad and believe me it's a full time job, now you know why riding is so special to me.

Sounds like you've got it figured out, Rob. I *wish* I could get that much out of a tire, but I don't ever see it happening. I'd have to trade in the entire hobby if I wasn't able to twist that right wrist on some of our long straights out here in TX. I average about 2-3 rear tires/year, that's about 10,000-12,000 miles/year for me.

Got 1806 miles from my original rear, I replaced with same. Now both front and rear should wear out evenly. Gonna give those new Avons a try, Viper 49,60 series
