Only 300 Miles and One Flat Tire
Had a crappy day and was looking forward to get a ride in this evening. I backed out of the parking spot and it seemed like the clutch was sticking or something. I put it in gear and it seemed OK so I eased out into the street. As soon as I got to the main road a cop started following me. Was waiting for me to twist the throttle a millimeter too much or something. Poking along at 30mph something ddidn't seem right. I turned the corner and the bike felt unstable. I pulled over and felt the front tire. Plenty of air. Went to the back and it felt very low. I rotated the tire and sure enough a big shiney roofing nail right through the center. Damn! I went slow a couple blocks to a service station and re-filled the air. Puttered home with kids on pedal bikes wondering WTF? A ZX-14 and he's going 20mph?
Made it home at least. I know th safety police will scream but I am going to plug it. I'll keep a lid on since it is still breaking in. After first service could be a big smokey burnout and new rear rubber.

Yep - lost my rear at 1100 miles to something sharp. Except I had to wait for 3 hours to get a friend with a truck to come out and pick me up. I was out in the boondocks. Now I'm looking at those side of the road plug and fill kits just so I have something to limp home on.

I got cha beat. 100 friggen miles I picked up a 16 ga. staple. Loses 1-1.5 # per hour. The O.E. tire is on back order , so I might change to something else, since the front tire is too noisy.

Same thing happened on my zx-11 back in '98. 180 miles on the clock.
Thats a weird feeling when you turn a corner with a flat tire, huh?
I've had more than one person ask me why I squeeze my tires after lunch before hitting the road again.
Go with the two way patch (screw type plug and vulcanized inside), keep a close eye on your tire pressure (which you do anyway, yes) and keep the sustained speeds under 90 mph until you decide to replace the tire.
I would never fix a front tire because if that goes you are fucked, and I'd never push a repaired tire hard, but for getting through break-in or casual commuting you'll be fine. ;
Waiting for big smoky burnout video.
