I guess I have the dissenting opinion
Unless you know more than the Kawasaki engineers that designed the bike, follow Kawasaki's recommended break-in procedures.

I used to be a stickler more a kinder, more gentler break-in. Since the outrageously long 2k mile break in on the A1 and having done significant oil analysis testing I have decided that shit is for the birds.
Someone asked this a while back, and here is what I told them:
Lets say you have broken in your bike (I'm gonna use numbers here convenient for math but pretty realistic) as:
600 miles averaging 60 mph and 6000 rpm.
By the time you hit 600 miles your crank has spun over 3.6 million times and the pistons have made 7.2 million passes through the cylinders.
Its as broke in as its gonna get at 600 miles.
We can debate how much the engineers determine the break-in and how much the lawyers determine it, but thats fruitless. Be assured both are involved and the latter probably more than you think.
Kawasaki has always been very conservative concerning breakin. Hard limits for X miles PERIOD.
My new R1 just says "Avoid prolonged operation above 6900 rpm for the first 600 miles and 8300 rpm from 600-1000 miles. Prolonged full throttle operation during this period can cause overheating and must be avoided". There are no hard RPM limits stated anywhere.
Now, does Yamaha have a lot more faith in their motors than Kawasaki or are they more realistic and Kawasaki is overly conservative with their break-in?
I say the latter.
I change the oil around 400 miles, tach it up for short bursts until 600 miles and after that its time to let the kiddies out to play occasionally - mix it up, have fun, get jiggy.
Just my .03 (.02 adjusted for inflation)

I am going to hit the 600 mark soon. I can change the oil and filter myself, but how in depth does the dealer get in checking the bolts? They told me it would be around $200 bucks for the 600 mile service. Not to bad I guess ,but I have always worked on my own bikes(atv's) and have even changed main bearings. I don't want to mess up with such a high performance machine though. I guess with out a manual yet I don't have the torque specs.
I am undecided. Should I just give it a good once over ,or spend $200+ ? It could be a good way to learn your machine in and out.

They check throttle sync and things like that. I would let them do it.............and then change your own oil and tighten your own bolts after that.
