rear cowling

I seem to be missing the four screws that hold the seat cover on. What do they look like, are they plastic or what?

I set mine aside one day and later looked at them wondering what the heck they were from!! I thought I had removed something from my ZZR before trading it in and forgot to reinstall them. Then I noticed the rear seat cowl sitting on my workbench...

The screws are very nice looking with shiny threads and a shiny black painted head. There's the little plastic washer/spacer on each one. Should be pretty easy to spot them laying around your garage.

Stalwart - I like your idea of putting them back in the seat, that hadn't occurred to me! I'll do that next time I take the cowl off... then wonder where they are when it's time to re-install it!

With my seat off, there are just the four holes where it attaches to but there are no threads or anything like that. I thought maybe they used rubber plugs with a barb poking through.

The 4 holes have rubber grommets with threaded inserts in them... unless you pulled the grommets out?

The rubber nuts are called Wellnuts. Any good cycle shop will have them. Don't know if they are 5 or 6mm. Measure.

How were your rear cowls attached at the dealer when you bought the bike if those well nuts were missing?

I don't know that I'd trust that dealer... the seat cowl was installed from the factory and was present while the bike was in the crate. I wonder why the dealer took it off in the first place? Probably so he could sell you the bolts and grommets

Kinda like buying a Shoei X-Eleven at a dealer, then they try to *sell* you the breath/nose guard, chin screen, and carry bag that were already included in the price of the helmet!

(btw, 1000th post - WOO HOO!! )

Zermatt, I've personally put two ZX14's together out of the crate and the seat cowl does not come installed on the bikes! You have to put it on if you want it on. I would say if yours was on when you took delivery, your dealer installed it for you.

Cowl was not on my bike when I picked it up. Dealer handed it to me in a foam package. Bolts and special nuts were in the package. Dealer let me borrow a screw driver. I had it on in about 5 minutes. I bought my bike in another city and was riding it home, so I did have to mount it right away.

When I picked mine up, the guy who did the test ride then reviewed the bike with me (who I thought was also the guy who uncrated it) didn't have a clue that the cowl even came off. He even asked me if I was going to want the "two up" seat for it...

Guess I'm just victim of another moron dealer. Kinda like the ones who give out rear seat covers without the mounting bolts. Which is worse?

I had a problem with my seat not latching with the cover on. You couldnt push on it enough to get it to latch in the back....so i took the uni bit and made the holes for the latch alittle bigger and moved the latch back a 1/8 of a inch...now it latches

My dealer gave me what he thought I needed but the well nuts will fall right out of the holes in the seat.. Do they push in tight on your bikes? He must have gave me the wrong size.
