14 hotter than zx12r and zzr1200
what's the deal, i've had my 14, 2 weeks now, and i've just rode it around town and it runs hot.
my partner got a 14 too and he called me today and ask have i been riding my 14, and i told
him around town. he wanted to know ,was it his bike or does the 14 run hot . we are going
to bikeweek in myrtle beach this weekend, and we know that the 14 will run hot quick.
i notice that the 14 only has one fan, where as the 12r had two fans, and the zzr1200 can
run all day without running hot, what's up with that?
did kawasaki drop the ball on the coolant system?

If you wanted a bike for parades you should have bought an HD. Until you lose a drag race because your 14 over heated I don't think you have anything to complain about.
Yep, I'm a dick.

Check how the temp sensor is wired...You may be able to wire up a 'constant on' switch if you are going to be running at trolling speed.

There are a few topics on this, yes they do run very hot...that's the nature of this beast. Never mind the sarcastic remarks by the othe guy; they run hot. Do a search and you will find some topics and maybe some solutions... I also complained about this, but have since decided to just grin and bear it...

I dono guys----my 14 has never run hot. I think the key is to make sure there is no air in the system. I drained the radiator----added 4 oz of water wetter, filled the rest with distilled water and anti freeze (mixed at 30 / 70). It took several heat cycles to fill all the air pockets but now all is well. On a hot day the temp will run one mark above center (while in slow traffic) but I have never seen it run hotter than that.. Also as soon as you can run at speeds above 40 mph, the temp is right on the center mark.

EASY, you're probably the only one here running like that. Most of the rest of us run hotter than that...but I'll certainly try what you did...30/70 water to coolant?

That seems to be the case---why me as they say. Usually its the other way around. Dont' tell anybody FBA, but I rode to get some gas Sunday in my shorts. Even then I only felt a warm breeze on my legs. Yep it is 30% antifreeze and 70% water. You need some anti freeze to protect the system and lubricate the water pump.
I really have no clue as to why my 14 is not running hot---maybe its only running on three cylinders----that would explain the looooow torque output below 4 grand.

FBA keep me up to date on the results. Here in Florida it can get mighty hot, a little cooler 14 would be nice.

Even though it's not hot here like in Fla, it's very humid and even at 75 or so, the beast runs hot...I can only imagine how hot it runs in your neck of the woods...I'll keep you all posted once I try what EASY did...EASY, yes thats it!!! Its running on 3 cylinders below 4k, now let's find the solution!

Mine runs hot as well. Coming home from the dealer in traffic, 5 bars. I see 4 to 5 on a regular basis. I suspect that it will improve slightly with miles. I'm going to add water wetter to the 50- 50 AF/ Water mix. When I get 2,000 miles on it I am defiantly switching to synthetic oil.

my zx12r ran hot around town in Las Vegas.. But of course thats las vegas. If there is room add a fan.. So that it comes on when the other two do..I'de be willing to bet that the radiater is kind of smallish..

This is EASY Gentlemen!
The 14 is terribly LEAN at low RPM / Part throttle. This will cause ANY engine to run HOT!
EASY has a Great recipe for the cooling system. Anytime you can run a high water content and decrease the surface tension (water wetter) will increase the systems ability to dissapate heat quickly.
I have run this mix on my 2000 1270 for years and have observed a 15-20 degree drop in overall operating temperature.
Once any of you can get a good map into a 14, the hot running issue will also "dissapate"

I've also mentioned this cooling benefit in the 0-5000 rpm "restriction" thread.

So with all these complaints about running hot, has anyone actually had their engine boil over and dump out coolant? Or is this all a myth about running hot? Maybe the gauge reads a bit high but the cooling system is just fine?

The purpose of the temp guage is so that you do not boil the coolant out of the cap. By that time, on a new moto,r or even a broken in one you are risking serious engine damage.
