Just to reinforce that these are not isolated instances, I too hear the noise upon cold startup. I agree, the cam chain tensioner sounds like the most likely scenario to me. Good design or not remains to be seen, but I'm not losing any sleep over it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO, don't use that snake oil!
I hope you are using the prescribed viscosity oil suggested by Kawasaki. I'll keep this brief, engine manufacturers set clearances and suggest lubricants for given temperature ranges. Think of viscosity as the size of the oil globules that act like little ball bearings between surfaces. Running too tight of clearances for a given viscosity will crush the globules and provide inferior protection and can actually "break down" the oil. Running too light of viscosity for given clearances can do the opposite and also provide inferior protection.
I like to follow the mfg. recommendations for the ambient temperature until such time as the engine has accumulated MANY miles and I notice a small drop in oil pressure. It is only then that I go above the mfg. recommendations.
Its your bike, you do what you want.

I noticed the noise on stock oil after I let the bike sit for a couple days. I think it wasn't there b/c I rode two to three times a day and the oil seemed to stay inside the tensioner... On my old BMW the camshaft tensioner was also activated by oil pressure, although there was also a very stiff spring inside the unit, and I never noticed any noise upon startup.

Mine started making that sound after 600 miles ...I only does it if i let it set for a few days with out running it .... It's kind of loud and scary when it does it .....I'm sure it the cam chain slapping around till oil get to the Adjuster and removes the slack...I don't think it's a good thing or normal for a bike to do that....Look at it this way , if it making noise it's hitting something that it should not be hitting... It's going to damage something in time, the chain or guides or grind away at the cases....Either way that is not good...

My first thought when I heard about the noise was the chain tensioner bleeding down too.

I forgot about this thread, I guess I've put close to 5000 miles on my 14 since I wrote this and not a peep since. Maybe it was a break in thing. Note starting up the 14 is smoother with 5500 miles than at 1000 miles. FI had to be broken in I'm guessing.

The stock oil filter does not have a bypass valve, so cold oil may not be getting to the tenisioner quickly. Also the filter may be letting oil flow back through the filter to the pan. At any rate, I started using Mobil one filters and have not heard any noise except when I change the oil and filter and the filter has to fill-up. Mine has not made any noise on startup ever since.

Easy you make a great point. I had 600 miles on my bike about a week after I took delivery. The shop did not have the new filters so I changed the oil with the original filter still on. At 2000 miles I switched over to Ams-oil with new filter and like you have not heard it since.

Just a note guys ...thinking back mine never did it with the stock Kawi oil filters...I changed the oil twice and used the stock filter , the third oil change i used a Pure One filter.....
You guys think that maybe the cause???????

It's my thought after Easy's post. I will admit it did happen once with the original filter then again with the stock filter w/Ams-Oil, but not in the last 3500 miles.

The cam tensioner is (automatic ratchet) self adjusting. Even if the oil assist was plugged off, the bike would sound no different. If this chain was loose anytime, the noise would be constant and never go away hot or cold. The oil assist in the tensioner is a simple spray... pressured onto the slipper (12053A). When you get this chain whip to the rear, all the oil does is load the upper part (pushes the slipper in) so the chain remains more taught. The flex can still override the oil pressure. The movement is quite (short) subtle. Stops the chain from riding over the sprockets for one, plus the anti-whip holds the cam timing... for what it's worth diagnosing next time?
