Suspension adjustments

Curious to see if anyone my size has setup the suspension yet...I'm 6'2" and 210 lbs...since I found the bike somewhat soft and with a tendency to bottom on the front shocks on bad bumps and a bit of wallow, I tightened her up last night and rode her today.

I gave the compresion and rebound damping, front and rear and front pre load a single 360 turn each. I rode it today and found it a bit too bouncy now...I don't have a lot of experience setting up suspensions myself; I've always had a pro do it for me...but want learn more about doing it myself. So, I am curious, exactly what effect will each of the settings have? Do I need to adjust them all or single out some of them? Has anyone here my size done their's to a degree that they are happy with?

FBA, I'm close to your size. 6'4" 206 without gear. I'm going to get my sag set right as soon as the bike's broken in a little more. If you find something that works, let me know. And vise versa.

I'm patiently waiting for Ohlins to release a rear shock for the 14. I would still love to hear about any suspension settings that seem to work

FBA, some good sites to check out are:

Good info for setting up suspension.

TJ, that Ohlins 46ERS that they have for the ZX-12R is probably the one that they would use for the 14. I like the remote preload adjuster. Have always liked Ohlins products. I have them front and rear on my Ducati.

FBA, put the rebound and compression back to where it was...Go for a 20 minute ride to warm up the suspention, Then adjust the fork spring adjuster 1 full furn clockwise and the same for the rear spring...Now go for a ride, if to soft then do it again until you like the stiffness...The springs should do some of the work, not just the rebound and compression, that way the shock will last longer...

I recommend dropping the forks a 1/2 inch, then you will not get any tank slappers...

How difficult is it to spin the preload rings on the rear shock? My old ZZR was externally adjustable, so I never had to mess with spanner wrenches or anything fancy. Can it be done without spanners or taking the rear wheel off to gain access?

Yup, but you just need the right tool for it...my 10R was impossible without that tool...

Call Racetech. Often the ZX-14 products are available but their site's or info have not been published with the info. If they don't have something now, I would bet that within a month they will.

I just want to let you know that I too felt the forks were too soft. I'm 6'2" 235lb. I turned the preload down 1 line, increased the rebound by 1 click to the right (gold screws on top of forks). I turned the comp. damp 1/4 turn to the left (screw on lower bottom of fork) this feels real good for now. I'm not riding full on , only 200 miles on ODO. So these settings will probably not be optimum at full tilt. They are pretty good for now, haven't bottomed out forks & they're tracking nice. Haven't touched the rear shock yet it feels good for now. I will set the sag front & rear when I get an extra set of hands. Hope this was helpful.

Yeah the front forks are way soft. I increased the preload and compression, rebound damping some. I still need to go up on the preload. I think the rear shock needs more rebound damping because it really springs back hard over bumps...

I added a 1/2 line more of preload to the fork & put the comp. damp back to stock. The rear shock I gave 1 full turn on preload & 1 click to the right on the rebound . I still haven't set the sag(I need 2 people to give a hand). I'am probably going to stop screwing around & have Lindemann Engineering set me up a Penske 3 -way & overhaul the forks. That was what it took for me to be right on my 10R. It was worth every penny.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm an Ohlins shock $1295.00 I should get a dozen lol.
Unless you race and can't control yourself on the street then that is rediculous.
If you ride so hard that the back shock is such an issue that you won't be with
us long so send your info I wan't to get a life insurance policy on you.........................

See, a post like that tends to expose ignorance. Those 2 suspension changes will net me more confidence & speed in any corner I approach than you will ever have the pleasure of experiencing! If you read the post I said Penske not Ohlins (Penske costs more but you get what you pay for! )
Yes , my friend I do ride that hard & I enjoy it more safely with the above listed mods.
When you make a statement like yours, it just showed that you haven't been there & probably never will.
Can't wait to see what you think of a set of Galfer waves , EBC HH Pads & S.S. Brake lines
I have done these mods on ALL of my street/track bikes. They are worth every penny!
One more thing, what you pay & what I pay are vastly different , if you have to pay 1295.00 for an Ohlins Shock that must be painful.

Not sure how this works, but pics of 10R w/ new suspension. 14 will wear the same soon!

I was the one that wanted an Ohlins shock. I personally prefer Ohlins over Penske. Nothing wrong with either one. I am not aware of any test or scientific basis for calling either one "better" than the other.

Suspension is one of the best mods someone can make. As for cost, who cares? Its just money and you can't take it with you I spent over $12K on a bike and then another $1K for a pipe. I sure am not going to start getting cheap on something as important as suspension.

By the way, I talked to Jim Lindemann about parts for the ZX14. He has replacement shock springs in stock and either has or can get new fork springs. Ohlins shocks are not out yet.

LE is the way to go! He set up my Penske Ultimate (Ti Spring) for my 04' ZX10R. I 'am a Dealer for his products. If you want me to drop you a line on new stuff as it becomes available , can do! He also sets-up Ohlins Boingers.

Anyway I was only fucking around for one. And on the other side I am an
ex cop ( no I did'nt ride around giving out tickets ) I worked in a Federal Building.
My point being you mentioned more power and speed in corners. If your going to
push the 14 to these limits your not going to last long meaning licsence wise or
your life. I ride hard as fuck so Im assuming you want to go nuts. I have seen
allot of dead bikers when I worked FAR ( fatal accident reconstruction ) and yes
I have seen ohlins shocks next to peoples cracked heads so just becareful. If your
talking about the riding I think you are if not then disregaurd.

Vak

And I would be wise to take my own advise yes I go a little nuts sometimes lol my bad

I don't think anyone actually believes an aftermarket shock will prevent all accidents.

However, a properly tuned suspension will enhance your riding in 20 MPH tight twisties as much as 100 MPH sweepers. You don't need to ride super fast to get benefit out of an upgraded suspension.
