Crash stories here !!

Recently Gunner said his girlfriend had a nasty get off. This started me thinking. What works ( equipment, technique, experience ) and what does not ( I don't wear a helmet because....) I have several stories and will post more but first lets see if we can all learn something here. Post your story and your analysis of what happened and why. Then explain what you think you could have done better and I bet we could all benefit from your experience or maybe not? Fish say there are 6000+ member here, thats a lot stories

I went down hard last July.

Broken collarbone, 4 broken ribs, punctured lung. It was not a pleasant experience and one which I don't wish to repeat. If you've never had broken ribs, keep it that way. It's a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

My saying is "It's not a question of IF you'll go down, but WHEN". I rode on the street for 27 years before the grim reaper took a swipe at me. It happened at the most innocuous time of the ride when I wasn't pushing things or even getting jiggy.

What happened? I'll never know for sure. I believe I got either oil or antifreeze on the back tire because it broke loose hard as I was setting up my curve. I got control of the bike after a small tank slapper but I was out of road at that point and the rest, as they say, is history.

It happens quick. Total elapsed for me was maybe 4 seconds.

There is no question in my mind that my gear saved me. Even the E.R. doctor said that I would probably have been DOA if not for it. He touched my hand and had a look on his face when he said it that led me to believe he's seen more than one motorcycle fatality.

It was touching for sure.

Full leathers, full face helmet, gloves, boots - they'll save ya.

I see guys riding in shorts and flip-flops all the time and it makes me cringe.

I could have survived the wreck (more painfully I am sure) without the leathers, but if I had not had the helmet it's doubtful I would be typing this.

1991 I was out Picking up my friends pay cheque with my wife taging along. we where doing maybe 55 km an hr The road was an uphill curve to the right as i crested the curving hill there was a car stopped in the middle of the lane talking to a friend in his car in front of him. there was an oncomming vehical so i couldent go around this was all taking place in about 3 to 4 secs by this time i must have grabbed a bunch front brake and down we went the bike and chucked us off and the oncomming car had cleared and we stopped about 75 feet down the road on the curb. The bike hit the back of the car ripping a hole in his fuel tank and taking out the shock strut . In the end i was charged with driving againts road conditions which was later dropped As a moral it was the first and last day i didnt wear my leather pants. with my wreaked knees i went roofing the next day in pain. I dont Know what i could have done diffrently had i used both brakes i still would have hit the back of the car had i used only the back brake i would have been pinned under the bike with my wife under the car???????? i learned to always be more cautiuos enter a blind corner.

In 1984, I was riding my GPz900R (First Ninja) on a poker run with friends. Last thing I remember was stopping at a McDonalds to get lunch. Was in Charleston, SC. Turned down Bushy Park Road, where there was a large fishing reservoir. I was going down that road at some kind of speed, don't know for sure. Buick station wagon turned left in front of me. I clocked the Buick, knocked the motor off the mounts and back into the firewall. It also broke the spindle of the left front tire off the a frame and folded it back along the door. I flew 150' through the air, before coming back down and hitting cars that were parked facing the road. I hit six in a row before landing between the sixth and seventh car. I hit those cars hard enough to mash the outline of the front tire in the fender before rolling over and hitting the next one. Obviously, I was'nt talking or walking over to see how the bike was...In fact, i wasn't doing much at all, including breathing or still having a pulse. But wft, they got me started again, the ambulance came and loaded me up. Had to restart me a couple times on the way. Fractured skull (full face came off sometime after the initial hit), compound fracture of the femur with fractures going all the way down into the knee joint. Split kneecap, and some teeth knocked out. That hurt the worst. Couple months in the hospital. Leg was too broke up to pin or plate, had to just put it in traction and let it knit back together the old fashioned way. First bike when I was healed up? '85 Ninja, of course!

First get off... Cb100 low sided in a corner ..I hit some lose stones and washed out the front tire...Lots of road rash but nothing broken..

Second get off... GS1000 i forgot to put the kick stand up ...Jumped off on some good grass ...Lite road rash..

Third get off ..1979 CBX .Went down in my driveway, i grabbed to much front brake and went down ..Thank god for Hondaline crash bars ...

All these where done with no gear at all .....No helmet, gloves or leather...
Now that i'm 50 years old i wear all the gear because i know i can't heal like i did when i was younger ..

Now if we talk about off road wrecks i could write a book about my broken bones..

In 2001 took the 12R out for the evening. About 50 degrees or so and had Dunlops on the bike. Geared up with helmet and fairly heavy Kawasaki jacket and gloves and boots. Got on and rode about a 1/4 mile and made or rather attempted to make a left hand turn onto another street. I guess a little to much lean as I "swooped" the corner. Next thing I know I am on my ass and the bike is sliding. It slides on the left side then slides off the road into the grass. The footpegs and and rear stand spools catch the dirt and it flops over onto the right slide and fucks that side of the upper and lower fairings as well.

I got a 50 cent piece of rash on my knee, tore my jacket and 3500 dollars in damage on my bike from a 30 mph low side. Very lucky...

Swft all I can say is ouch. Here is mine. June 21 1987. I'm at Elkhart Lake Wis. Road America raceway. I am entered in a Formula II race on my highly modified GPZ 550 built by Joe Koenig. Joe now owns Team Trim-Tex Pro Stock NHRA drag racing. This bike was hot for a little 550 (600) it would pull stock FZ 750s up the uphill straight at Elkhart. The race was started and then red flagged after one lap because of a torrential downpour. The AMA CCS officials said they would break for lunch and let the track dry out some and then resume the race. On the restart I hit the first turn in about 5th the track was still wet in spots as there was runoff coming down the hills around the track. I was doing well, we were a couple laps from the end and I was in 4th with 2nd and 3rd right in front of me. I had been pulling up on them for the last couple of laps and knew if I could get by I would stay by them. We were leaving Canada corner and coming up on the pedestrian bridge. I started the pass I had momentum on both of them and started the pass on the outside left as the next turn is the last right before the uphill straight. I knew passing on the outside was risky. If anything goes wrong you will be gathered up and take to the out side with them. I did it anyway and just when a started around the guy in 3rd he lost it. He hit some water dripping off the bridge. He and his bike and I still riding mine with him tumbling inside my down leg took me to the wet grass. Once in the grass I was beat. Ran out of grass, next a chain link fence hit it doing about 50-60 mph. 6 broken ribs many spinal fractures with L6 and L7 in pieces. Punctured lung, lacerated kidney and a laundry list of other issues. I had to have spinal fusion surgery to repair. I felt like Humpty Dumpty It took about 6mo to walk further that the bathroom and a year to fully recover. I DO NOT PASS on the outside any more.

Fuckin' A guys, you have gone through some serious shit! I've only had a few minor crashes and it's almost an insult to you guys to call them that. I just lost traction a few times and had the front tire head to he outside of the corner (fucking slippery white stripes) . . . resulting in a slide of ground up plastic and aluminum. Aside from a bruised body parts and ego I got off without injury of consequence. The only accident I've had with another vehicle occurred at 55-60 when a Kz750 tagged my V-Max HARD from the right rear. I just had to counter-steer to the lock but the other guy was left doing a break-dance in his t-shirt inches from of a car.

Tony crashed his computer once . . . and got rear-ended at a NAMBLA event.

When that picture was taken I was FAT but 6'2" and 215 now, not really.

Would you and Tostito kindly come on over, my tank tracks need some lubrication and you two outta squish up real nice. I'll even squish the Pinto, SRT47, moped and your NAMBLA buddies for no extra charge. I'm easy to find, just down the street from the MicroShaft main campus.
