Gear Indicator Question?

I am assuming the gear indicator is just a numerical calculation of speed vs rpm vs static table of stock gear ratios. I have watched my indicator, and it is incorrect quite a bit of the time. I would go from 4th to 5th at a low RPM, and the indicator will jump to 6th. Othertimes I would jump around from gear to gear, and it shows the old gear for a while until I accelerate, etc. This would indicate that the gear is just a ratio calculation, and sometimes this results in the wrong gear being shown.

If it is doing a numerical "guesstimate", then will changing the sprockets really mess up this indicator even more?

I thought it was a resistive device, like on a Suzuki. Providing an input to the ECU rather than an ECU output derived from other data. Interesting !

Anyone know ?

I've never had mine display the incorrect gear, but it is a little slow to change the gear display when shifting. It takes a brief moment (a few milliseconds) to acknowledge a gear change most of the time.

I will watch what RPM I am in when I go from 4th to 5th, where it then displays 6th. It is raining here for the next 4-5 days, so it will be a while before I am out again. I noticed the late updates too, but this is a different problem. Somewhere around 2K - 2.5K gear change from 4th to 5th did wierd things.

Me neither..slow to change sometimes...but that's probably due to data packet collisions on the CANbus, quite normal I would say. Me thinks you have a defective unit...have you added anything electrical or changed some electrical characteristics on the bike, like lights, flashers, GPS, heated grips or heated vests...anything lke that? Because if you do or did, you've got to be very careful where you take power from; it's not like the old days, where you could plug anything in anywhere...the bike runs on several computers that use data lines between to communicate. Aftermarket accessories should not be plugged into the fuse box, but rather right from the ignition switch on a seperate inline fuse...

I agree with the slow to change, but dropping the clutch seems to me to be right on.

Oh, and I forgot that I have had an issue when pulling up to a stop...like it indicates 3rd and stays there till I pass neutral or hit 1st...this at 2-5 MPH or stopped. BFD...not a major issue to me...don't think I''ll be stalling or dropping the bike cuz of this either.

Good point. The only time I ever look at the gear indicator is when I'm cruising at slow-to-moderate speeds on the highway just to make sure I don't forget to hit 6th and save some gas. Other than that, I've got it in whatever gear feels good for the situation and I don't realy care which gear that is, as long as it gets the job done.

Actually, it's probably the only post in the last 1000 threads that hasn't been "jacked" yet...
