Poll Question:
Engine Heat Poll (Owners only please)

I'm interested in hearing from people who actually OWN a ZX-14 and what they think about the engine heat and how it is dealt with. Our personal experience was a lack of engine heat, however this is in comparison to a ZX-12R and a ZX-10R.

Many members have responded noting a lack of heat, yet other the opposite. Is your comparison in relation to a ZX-10R, 12R or other bike?

NOTE: I AM TALKING ABOUT ENGINE HEAT BEING "BLOWN" ONTO THE RIDER NOT THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ENGINE AS INDICATED ON THE TEMPERATURE GUAGE. PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE THIS. THIS POLL REQUIRES THAT YOU READ!!!

There were options for hot and cold but no vote option for "the same". I have not noticed a big diference in engine heat when compared to my ZX12R and/or CBR929RR.

This bike throws more heat on the rider at low speed and when stopped than my 05 10R...not as bad as the R1, but not much better either.

I get no heat from my zrx1200 .... My 05 zx10 didn't seem to put off much heat ... The zx14 heats my knees up pretty good and that's riding at nite with temps in the high 60s to low 70s ...I don't think i want to ride the zx14 in the FL summer heat....I will try it this summer but i bet i'm not going to be happy ...

Fish just a heads up. I've owned 3 VFR's, 2 ZX-11's and 2 ZX-6's with the exception of the 600's heat was always worse on the new tighter engine the first several months than say after 3-4000 miles. Today's engines are designed to run lean thus hotter than if the fuel mixture were normal. I feel confident that after say 4000 miles this motorcycle will not be as hot as some (including me) are experencing. Not to say it won't be hot or very warm from time to time. 2 days ago it was 78-81 F and this bike was very very uncomfy. Today riding in traffic then hi-way back into traffic, the before hi-way riding the heat was getting un-comfy. However after the hi-way temperture climbed right back up there and I did not feel the heat the way it was just 30 mins earlier (outside temp 88-90F). Lets be fair in the way we report this issue by comparing the 14 vs. Bike year and miles.
ZX-14 = 400+ miles is hotter than
2002 VFR = 83,553 miles
OH yea I'm the nerd of the group. (eyes roll)

My ZRX was never too hot even in Phoenix; the older '90 ZX 10 directed the heat back at the rider more. The function of the fairing dictates this some I think. The 14 is hot on the rider when the temperature rises above 90 deg Fahrenheit when sitting. It is not horrible though as it is less of a problem at speed.

I felt more heat on my ankles/shins on the '14 on a warm (90F) day than my ZZR did on hotter days. I believe it is improving, but I haven't had the opportunity to spend a whole "warm" day on the bike since that first experience with about 150 miles on the bike. I rode about 250 miles today in the upper 70's and everything was wonderful - no heat complaints, but there's also 1,150 miles on the bike and one oil change. Hard to say if the heat problem is getting better with age, but I do think it's possible.

I should also mention that I felt the heat mostly on my right ankle, not my left. I have also had a stupid little foam "wedge" come unlodged from the right side under the plastic cover sandwiched between the clutch housing. I've shoved that stupid thing back into place at least 6 times now - pushing further each time in an attempt to get it to STAY PUT. Today I rode 250 miles, a few of those being at 175+ speeds, and it didn't move. Maybe I pushed it far enough this time, who knows.

So far though, I will say that both "felt" heat and engine temp (gauge) have improved since my initial complaints.

You can remove all of them, but more heat will come out at your shins and ankels.

As posted by other members, my "other bike" is a ZRX1200 and it has no problem
with rider heat. This is my first "sport bike" and I love it, The heats not that big of a deal.

PS. the ZRX is way faster too.......

i live in houston, tx which is famous for heat and hummidity, i rode mine yesterday about 150 miles, temp was around 85 degrees, did not feel much heat on my leg as you drive on highways., but when you stop at stop lite, temperature goes up alot quicker than any other bikes i had except zx12. i would say is as bad as zx12. it is around your knee down.

T'is what t'is people...Dubious is right...that's the price we're gonna pay for this ticket. KHI was never that good at heat management; one thing Zuk has over them...but, I'll keep my 14 over the Busa any day of the week. Power aside (more of it in any case) it just does everything better than my Busa's ever did, except low speed roll-on's which will be fixed at some point in the aftermarket anyway and at least it has real brakes! :NAHA

More heat at slow traffic speeds (800 miles and one oil change on the bike) than my XX (30K on my 2002). Fine once I get where I can open her up. It's all good. I'll live with that minor issue 'cause all the rest of the bike makes it better!

I may get a chance to see how well this puppy cools in the rain. I don't know about you all but above say 85 degrees the 14's fan runs all the time.

jimp, that's hardly constructive...most big twin Harley's don't generate heat on the rider. This bike does...most of the guys here who have 14's now will admit to having more heat than they would like on the 14...you're almost alone here when you make that type of statement. Where do you live -- in Kamchatka in an igloo?
