Range / Mileage / Reserve
For those of you that have asked, I payed a little closer attention to my fuel usage and replacement amounts when I filled up a few minutes ago. I believe this was my 4th tank.
My trip meter for this tank showed 134.4 miles traveled. The range computer was telling me that I had 43 miles left. I filled the tank to the same level as the previous fill point - probably a tad over full according to the owners manual, it took 4.267 gallons. That makes my actual mileage 31.5mpg, the computer was estimating 32.9mpg, but I am pretty sure that average included previous tanks as I hadn't reset that average since the first tank (yes, the average can be reset to start from scratch).
So, if I'm reading everything correctly, I had approximately 1.533 gallons left in the tank (I think it's a 5.8 gallon tank). Actually, I probably had more since I tend to over fill a tad, so I might be putting 5.9 or 6.0 gallons in, but we'll go with 5.8 for this discussion. Assuming 1.533 gallons left at 31.5mpg, I should have had 48.29 miles left on that tank before it was dry. The trip computer was telling me that I had 43 miles. From the sounds of this particular excercize, I don't think there is very much of a reserve past the computer's estimated range.
The thing that frustrates me a little is the fact that when your fuel level is below 40 miles or so, the huge gas pump and message "FUEL EMPTY" starts flashing, so you don't get to see your range or trip meter readings again... you have to calculate it in your head from the ODO reading. I looked in the manual, there is no way to make the FUEL EMPTY message go away without filling up the tank.

Matt do you have over 600 miles now? The VFR did not fully break in til about 3000 miles so my MPG went from the mid 30's to the mid 40's in that time frame. Is she still heating you up pretty good? Thanks for the updates

She's got 680 miles on the clock right now (had to run out to the garage to look ). Did the first oil change Wednesday night with 609 miles showing.
I fully expect the mileage to go up with more miles too - just wanted to give some details for those who were curious.

Oh, heat - It's been cooler here the last couple of days, lows in the 50's, highs in the 70's. Heat is just fine - exactly where I'd expect it to be. One segment above mid in traffic - pretty normal. We'll see what happens when the weather turns hot again next week.

On my 04R1, when the low fuel light comes on, (no fuel gauge) the dispay automatically switches to miles traveled since the light came on. It automatically resets to 0 on its own when the light comes on. On my bikes with no fuel gauge, you just get the kow light.
What does the 14 tell you? You can't switch back to MPG / range during low fuel?

Matt how is your chain holding up? My chain normally needs it's first adjustment right about now (600 miles). Is adjusting the chain a real PITA? One thing about the VFR I'm gonna miss is that single sided swingarm.

Nope, you don't get to see anything but the clock, ODO, and a HUGE image of a gasoline pump flashing in combination with "FUEL EMPTY".
You cannot get to your trip meters or range screens... so you're *guessing* how much distance you have left, or trying to do the math from the ODO.

You have tried hitting the mode/reset button and the 2 together I guess? Have you tried and extended press on either one?

No, I should have done that last night when I wiped the chain down and lubed it. My guess is that chain adjustement will be fairly easy - the setup looks just like my ZZR did - loosen the axle nut and the adjuster jam nuts, turn the adjuster bolts, then tighten everything back up. I'm just glad they didn't use that silly-ass accentric setup that my ZRX had... what a stupid setup that was!

Thats a good idea with the gas guage!!!...Thats Kawasaki helping those that feel the need to run on fumes all the time to just get gas and stop being a cheap bastard
I would guess when the gas pump is shown on the guage then you have approximately 1 gallon of gas left???

Nope, no mention of it in the manual. I've tried hitting each button, holding them, both at the same time, holding them... everything... nothing worked.
CR - The gas pump comes up when you're at 40 miles range if I remember correctly (could be 39). I would estimate that based on my fuel mileage so far, that's somewhere in the 1.2-1.4 gallons range. I don't know if the FUEL EMPTY is directly tied to the range number, of if it goes straight off fuel level... time will tell, but so far, each time it's happened at +/- 40 miles range.

Last time I ran out of gas on my 12, I was 20 miles down a forest road with another 10 miles back to civilization. No houses, no cell coverage...Power line crew happened by with a sat phone, was able to call in help.

I generally fill up at every opportunity. The problem is that every once in a while, we'll get some joker on a RC51 or similar riding with us and he needs gas every 90-95 miles to stay safe. So, I've skipped a gas stop or two because I've only logged 60 or so miles, and I figure with 120+ mile range, I'll be fine. The problem with this sinereo on the 14 is that once I reach 80 more miles and my range is down to only 40 left, that damn gasoline pump and FUEL EMPTY start going bezerk on my gauges... it's quite distracting.

For you metric guys, use a constant number "235" to convert MPG to liters/100 km, example, 40 mpg is 235:40 = 5.875 l/100 km

I don't even have a bike but here is my prediction. I will Avg between 42-60 mpg if that is possible. How?
1 Weight = 155 lbs
2. Florida = Flat as a pancake
3. Elev = Sealevel
4 I'm short 5 foot 4 inches tall = I cut thru the air better..OK that was weak
5. Billy Bad Ass has a badge and there's very little going on at 5 am cept me going to work.
6. Drive like a puss until I get out of town.
Then again could going a little crazy waiting.

I hear ya Matt, thats why I said approximately 1 gallon But you cant really put a # on it because of how you ride the mileage will vary, I know you knew that though
Thats ok FBA, sometimes we forget to get gas, thats different than knowing you need gas and saying i'll make it home or I have enough to go for a ride

Hell - I should say that I'm pleased that the 14 had a fuel gauge that's somewhat accurate for a change. My ZZR would stay at 100% full until there was about 1.5 gallons left, then drop like a lead balloon!
